Spinning 9/11 - The press ignores the commission's most interesting findings
Wall Street Journal ^ | 6/18/04

Posted on 06/18/2004 1:45:47 AM PDT by kattracks

We'll say this on behalf of the latest staff reports from the 9/11 Commission: They are far more interesting than the media coverage suggests. Americans who go online to read the reports will actually learn a few things.

For example, they'll discover new details about the links between al Qaeda and Iran. The conventional wisdom has been that these Shiite and Sunni cultures couldn't meet, but the report says they did so "to cooperate against a common enemy"--the infidel U.S.

Specifically, al Qaeda operatives trained in Iran, and al Qaeda helped Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorists obtain explosives. Al Qaeda was also probably involved in two attacks on U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia, including the 1996 bombing of Khobar Towers that killed 19 Americans and injured 372 and had previously been blamed largely on Hezbollah. This certainly sheds some useful light on State Department attempts to "engage" Tehran's mullahs as they attempt to build a nuclear bomb.

Another revelation concerns al Qaeda and anthrax. The 9/11 panel says al Qaeda had an "ambitious" biological weapons program and "was making advances in its ability to produce anthrax prior to September 11." It cites CIA Director George Tenet as saying that al Qaeda's ability to conduct an anthrax attack is "one of the most immediate threats the United States is likely to face." Given that we already were attacked by anthrax, and that we still don't know who did it, this sounds like news too.

Has anyone heard the ABC AM radio news reports on commission findings? Down here in SoFlo, AM 610 has been providing reports that give the impression that the 9/11 Commission concluded that the terrorists showered us with candy canes and gum drops, not the shredded body parts of our beloved.

The liberal media digusts me beyond comprehension. If I wasn't supporting GW before, for that alone I would. As it is, I can't conceive of allowing another liberal even the hopes of obtaining a position of power ever again.

The good news is that the Commission Chairmem were on Cable last night disputing media claims, backing Cheney's view. Gov, Thompson especially noted he was upset at the NYT.

In the meantime Venasty and Chrissy Matthews were spouting the liberal, dem, NYT talking points..(I watched 30 seconds of it)

Gee, wonder how they'd explain Salman Pak? Cuz they'd have to since I'm decently informed, no thanks to them. And I'm obviously not the only one. They are well and truly screwed.

The fact that the media feels an obligation to deliberately distort the findings of this already credibility-impaired committee speaks of desperation.

The media will once again get caught lieing for the Dems, further eroding their usefulness as a tool for them. The media has had amazing power to sway past elections, my bet is they will have much less effect on the upcoming one.

"Anyone who believes Al Qaeda operates in a vacuum with no sponsorship by hidden national support are deluding themselves."

Not only themselves, but they are trying to delude the rest of us and as well. Rhetorically, why is it the Democrats and the media make the same claims about GWB?

We know Saddam worked with the PLO and other terrorists, he funded them. He at LEAST knew that 9/11 was coming.

Less than two months before 9/11/01, the state-controlled Iraqi newspaper “Al-Nasiriya” carried a column headlined, “American, an Obsession called Osama Bin Ladin.” (July 21, 2001)

In the piece, Baath Party writer Naeem Abd Muhalhal predicted that bin Laden would attack the US “with the seriousness of the Bedouin of the desert about the way he will try to bomb the Pentagon after he destroys the White House.”

The same state-approved column also insisted that bin Laden “will strike America on the arm that is already hurting,” and that the US “will curse the memory of Frank Sinatra every time he hears his songs” – an apparent reference to the Sinatra classic, “New York, New York”.
