Nunn So Brave (Sam Nunn for VP?)
NY Post, Page Six ^ | 16 June, 2004 | Richard Johnson

IN the race among Democrats to become John Kerry's running mate, former Sen. Sam Nunn, 65, is ahead by a nose. Sources say the FBI has started combing through records of his business dealings, reviewing files and relationships. No wonder they started early — Nunn, a native of Georgia, serves on the boards of ChevronTexaco, Coca-Cola, Dell, GE, Internet Security Systems and Scientific-Atlanta, in addition to acting as co-chair and CEO of the Nuclear Threat Initiative. A rep for the Kerry campaign said, "We're not commenting on the process."

" Maybe Kerry is just continuing to float the names of conservatives as a ruse to help him with moderates. McCain until that got put to rest "

Susan Estrich insisted on FOX on Sunday, that McCain, despite all the denials, is still in play.
She was pretty adamant and quite excited about that prospect.
In fact, I bet McCain is the dream Presidential candidate for many Dems.
Donna Brazile ,however, said no way is a pro life conservative going to be a heart beat away from the Presidency on a Democrat ticket.
Kerry may be desperate enough to try to lure Ron Reagan onto the 2nd spot- I'd bet at a minimum, we will see him given a speaking spot at the Dem convention.

I heard Estrich say that too. Then there are 3 balls in the air today-McCain, Dunn and William Cohen. You are correct that a pro-life conservative would ultimately be a no-go. I am sure you are correct about Ron Reagan being a big deal at the convention. They are probably making his hotel reservations now.

I agree, commish. It would be totally out of character for Nunn to go to all the trouble to sit on his hands since leaving office, then throw all his chips in to tote Kerry's "warm bucket of spit" as veep. Now would he go to State? Sure. But that's an empty hypothetical. Just another goddamned trial balloon from the emAPty heads on a slow news day.

It could definitely bring Georgia into play. The yahoos down there definitely go for the "local boy"... they even went with the Peanut Farmer over Reagan...

Yes, but the average Americans tolerance of that hypocrisy does know the bounds, so to speak.

If not, they wouldn't be a shrinking minority party within our political system.

Does Kerry have the authority to ask the FBI to vett Nunn? Maybe the FBI is reviewing the records for a possible position in the Bush administration. Of course this could also be a totally made up story.

You should document this and put it on your home page incase they get close to naming Nunn. This statement would rip the rats apart: "Do you find it difficult being a Democrat these days? In terms of presidential politics at least, the party has seemed bent on self-destruction over the past couple of decades. "

Nunn: "I have enjoyed being in the Democratic Party. If you look at the whole realm of history, most of the lasting achievements both in foreign policy and domestic policy have come in Democratic administrations. "

I am uncomfortable with the post-Vietnam War Democratic National Party and its liberal image.

Kerry from Mass and Cohen from Maine? Not a chance in the world for an all yankee ticket.

I don't normally admit this to anyone,
but Sam Nunn is a distant distant relative of mine.
I have only met him twice, but I have written him
more than a few scathing letters over the years.

If Nunn took it, then we could say Sam Nunn actually was unlike Kerry before he was like him.

Yes! LOL - we'd have a VP Candidate Flip-Flop to go along with the Presidential Candidate Flip-Flop! A matched set!

The problem with Richardson is that he was Clinton's fixer in the Monica affair. Even though he's pretty competent and doesn't have the personal problems that most Clintonites have...

Richardson...competent? He was the guy runing the Department of Energy during the Los Alamos scandal. His so-called negoitations with North Korea were a disaster. He visited Afghanistan, met with the Tailban, and was part of our failed policy with that regime. His one year as UN representative was not great shakes with his most noteworthy accomplishment being a meeting with Monica about a job.
