Kerry`s Religion Outreach Director Reinforces His Weakness Among Religious Voters

What was John Kerry thinking when he appointed Mara Vanderslice as his Director of Religious Outreach?

Catholic League president William Donohue finds her a curious choice:

“Here’s what we know about John Kerry’s religious outreach person. Mara Vanderslice was raised without any faith and didn’t become an evangelical Christian until she attended Earlham College, a Quaker school known for its adherence to pacifism. When in college, Mara was active in the Earlham Socialist Alliance, a group that supports the convicted cop killer Mumia Abu- Jamal and openly embraces Marxism-Leninism. After graduating, Mara spoke at rallies held by ACT-UP, the anti-Catholic group that disrupted Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in 1989 by spitting the Eucharist on the floor. In 2000, she practiced civil disobedience when she took to the streets of Seattle in a protest against the World Trade Organization. In 2002, she tried to shut down Washington, D.C. in a protest against the IMF and the World Bank.

Meanwhile, Senate Democrats under the leadership of Senator Richard Durbin have just released a 'Catholic Issue Analysis' for all 100 United States Senators and guess who tops the list as the most Catholic of all Senators: John Kerry.

According to Sen. Durbin,

-a vote for or against the Dorgan Joint Resolution regarding broadcast media ownership is weighted equally (from a Catholic perspective) with a vote for or against the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act. -a vote for or against the Kerry National Affordable Housing Trust Fund is weighted equally (from a Catholic perspective) with a vote for or against a ban on human cloning.

Why all this attention to the Catholic vote? Catholics make up 25 – 30% of the vote in key battleground states such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Furthermore, while Catholics once voted reliably Democrat, a new Time Magazine poll shows Catholics divided 45% for Kerry; 43% for Bush.

Bush leads by 23 percentage points among Catholics who consider themselves religious, while Kerry holds a 46-point lead among Catholics who say they are not very religious. Those who deem themselves somewhat religious favor Bush by a margin of 47% – 43%.

With the poll showing that only 7% of likely voters regarding Kerry as a man of strong religious faith, Mara Vanderslice can only reinforce his weak image among religious voters.

After graduating, Mara spoke at rallies held by ACT-UP, the anti-Catholic group that disrupted Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in 1989 by spitting the Eucharist on the floor.

Kerry is a veritable cretin!

From Catholic Citizen

ACTUP and WHAM: Homosexuals and pro-abortionists belonging to the groups ACT-UP and WHAM (Women's Health Action Mobilization) stormed New York's St. Patrick's Cathedral on December 10, 1989, assaulting parishioners, disrupting Cardinal John O'Connor's Mass by screaming and shoving people, and desecrating the consecrated Host by throwing It on the ground and stamping on It. Outside, hundreds of screaming homosexuals burned Cardinal O'Connor in effigy and attacked passersby, all because the Cardinal had refused to toe their immoral "safe sex" line. Some of the placards the homosexuals carried displayed slogans such as; "MARY SHOULD HAVE HAD AN ABORTION; "CHRIST WAS A HOMOSEXUAL;" and "DEATH TO THE CHURCH!" After the invasion of St. Patrick's cathedral, ACT-UP issued a press statement saying that its cause is "... important enough [to allow us] to invade any space, to disrupt any speech."[46] In December of 1990, in defiance of a court order resulting from the attack one year earlier, homosexuals broke into the Mass once again and made off with consecrated Hosts, which they gleefully displayed outside.

"Greater Religious Responsibility": In 1989 and 1990, homosexuals waged a continuing war of vandalism and outright destruction against Catholic churches in Los Angeles. Homosexual attackers calling themselves "Greater Religious Responsibility" claimed responsibility for vicious attacks against Cardinal Roger Mahony, calling him a "murderer" for opposing their "safe sex" programs and for labeling the use of condoms "immoral." They attacked the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption in Los Angeles, desecrating it with bloody-red hand prints and pornographic photographs of perverted sex acts plastered on the windows. ACT-UP posters were pasted everywhere. At St. Catherine's, they nailed a ten-foot cross festooned with plastic penises and used condoms to the church door. They smeared the chancery with animal blood and entrails that appeared to be the products of Satanic sacrifices.

Catholic Ping - let me know if you want on/off this list

Yeah, Kerry is really "one of us."

Only Kerry would be so out of touch that he would hire a Commie for "religious outreach!"

I am surprise he didn't hire one of the priests accused of sexually molesting altar boys.

Do you think some of the shrapnel from his extensive war "wounds" could be affecting his judgement? LOL!

She should change her name to Mara Pandertovice.

More than seventy years earlier...

"Years later, the Freemasons in Rome began to demonstrate openly and belligerently against the Church. They placed the black standard of the "Giordano Brunisti" under the windows of the Vatican. On this standard the archangel, St. Michael, was depicted lying under the feet of the triumphant Lucifer. At the same time, countless pamphlets were distributed to the people in which the Holy Father was attacked shamefully."

"Right then I conceived the idea of organizing an active society to counteract Freemasonry and other slaves of Lucifer. In order to be sure this idea was given me by the Immaculata, I sought the advice of Fr. Alexander Basile, a Jesuit, who was my spiritual director as well as the confessor for the students of the Collegio (Serafico). Having listened to me, he put me under obedience to follow up this idea of an organization."
-St. Maximilian Kolbe, talking about founding the Militia Immaculatae

This is an indication of how things have changed little, and have probably gotten worse. Every serious Catholic should consecrate themselves to Mary Immaculate!

What was John Kerry thinking . . . ?

"Doh, thinking? Is that what a presidential candidate is supposed to do?"

Whoa.

And Kerry is not a Catholic. You will know a tree by its fruit.

So we have the Queen of Mozambique (a.k.a. Yoko) supporting Women's eNews.org, which ran an article extolling the virtues of the widows of Hezbollah homicide bombers, and Kerry's campaign media jerk in Florida who was an active participant in the VVAW's discussions regarding the assassination of U.S. senators and is said to have supported the idea, and now this socialist pig as a "religious outreach" advisor! This guy is worse than Clinton! At least Beelzebubba and the Beast tried to cover their tracks and protect their "political viability." Kerry isn't that smart or shrewd, and is simply counting on the Old Media to cover for him.

Kerry has a staff member who supports the disruption of religious services as ACT-UP did at St. Patrick's. That is simply a denial of freedom of religion and association -- shame on him! He is not just a bad Catholic, he is anti-Catholic!

Just unbelievable. Even though this is a religious topic, everyone should read this. It's completely disgusting.

Depends on where you think the shrapnel is located, or maybe I should say it depends on where you think his judgment is located?

Bottoms up

Her own words:

Religious Democrats?

You wouldn't know it by the candidates, but Christians form the base of the party.
by Mara Vanderslice

I remember the first time I heard Gov. Howard Dean speak, more than a year ago. Dean sharply criticized the move toward war in Iraq and wondered out loud why the other Democrats were not willing to challenge the Bush administration. At the time, the faith community had been active in opposition to the war, but while protests erupted around the world, our leaders in Washington remained painfully silent. Dean broke through that silence with what to me was a prophetic voice in a time that desperately needed politicians to be truth-tellers.

I was so inspired to see a candidate who was willing to stand up for the things I believed in that I decided to leave my job to work on the Dean campaign. As a Christian, I passionately wanted to galvanize the faith community around the candidate that had captured my heart and imagination. I headed to Iowa, where I managed to convince the Dean campaign to hire me to do outreach to religious communities. I was quickly dubbed the "church lady" as I tried to convince senior staff that, although many people of faith supported Dean’s positions, his secular image would hurt him in the election.

My appeals for intelligent language about faith were met with skepticism. I was told that Dean supporters were not religious and liked him because he didn’t talk about religion. A senior staff member who came into Iowa in the final weeks even asked me, "How in the world did you get hired?!" He just couldn’t comprehend expending resources to reach out to the religious community. "It’s not that I’m against it," he said, "it’s just I would have never thought of it. Who would have known religious people could get behind us?"

When Dean abruptly started talking about religion, his comments came across as insensitive and out of touch: He said he would only talk about religion when campaigning in the South; he called Job his favorite "New Testament" book.

I was amazed by the ignorance about religious people that I found among campaign workers, who seemed unable to comprehend Christians being Democrats. What an odd misconception, considering that an overwhelming percentage of Democrats are religious; according to George Barna, one of the most respected pollsters on religious matters, 79 percent of Democrats attend a Catholic or Protestant church. It was not the right wing Dean was alienating, but the very base of his party.

PRESUMPTIVE DEMOCRATIC nominee John Kerry need not make the same mistakes. Kerry and his wife Teresa have publicly emphasized the importance of their Catholic faith. Kerry spoke recently to a church audience quoting from James on how faith without works is dead. If Kerry continues to use religious language appropriately (and not only when speaking in the South) and embraces the millions of religious Americans that are the base of his supporters, he might just change some assumptions about the "secular" Democratic Party, and in the process, pick up a crucial constituency that could tip the balance of the election.

Ultimately, I can’t separate my Christianity from my values or my values from my politics. For me, being engaged in politics is an expression of my deepest held religious beliefs—it is about actualizing a collective commitment to protect the integrity of God’s creation, it’s about meeting the needs of the "least of these," and about our nation being a generous and trustworthy leader in the world. There are certainly positions taken by leading Democrats with which many Christians won’t agree—and many Christians are appalled by what they see as the exploitation of religion for political gain on the part of the Republican Party. The bottom line in applying our beliefs in the political arena is making an across-the-board assessment of who best represents the values we hold most dear.

The best way to overcome the misconceptions about the role of religious people in politics is to get involved. Christians should join a campaign, educate their faith community on the issues they care about, and get mobilized to register and vote. And if we do, politicians of all stripes will start to listen.

Mara Vanderslice, a Christian activist and political organizer, was the religious outreach coordinator for the Dean for America presidential campaign in Iowa.

My cousin was the Ass't DA assigned to the case of those demonstrators by DA Morganthau. He has told me that he was under orders from DA Morganthau to broker a deal that was lacking in any criminal cosequence to the demonstrators. They pled guilty to trespassing and disorderly conduct and were given community service in AIDS clinics. My cousin protested to his immediate superios by asking what would have happened had they been anti abortion demonstrators. He was told that was different and not to discuss the inner workings of the DA's office publicly.
He soon after let the DA for private criminal practice and Republican politics.
