ROCKY MOUNT, Va. - Perhaps visiting hours were over. Police shot and killed a full-grown black bear that wandered into a hospital Tuesday.
The 300-pound male bear wandered in front of Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital at about 9:10 p.m. and activated a sensor that opens the hospital's doors, police said.
The bear wandered down a few hallways and into a computer room, said Lt. Karl Martin of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Two police officers yanked the door shut behind it.
Officers planned to sedate the bear, but because the hospital was nearly full they worried about it getting loose. An officer shot the bear twice and killed it, Martin said.
Depends on the door, I suppose. Many hospitals use steel doorframes and solid-core wooden doors (or even steel doors) - very "institutional" construction. No matter... the bear's dead. Call the butcher and the taxidermist, stat!
To bad they killed the bear, I would have thought other means could have been taken to get the bear out of the hospital. Black bears are strong, smart and wild, but not vicious. This bear had probably been living out of the hospital dumpster for quite a while, most likely got curious and decided to have a look inside. Shame it cost him his life.
no supposedly about it. My father grew up there and until he died, he could drive through and point out whether or not the families of all the old houses had moonshined or not. My mother's mother lived there and I remember as a child her husband giving moonshiners permission to use his land and revenue agents watching them. And it continues...
It's God's country down there. If I had my choice of where I would like to live, Rocky Mount would be very near the top, if not the very top.
You ought to be going after the boneless variety if you intend to eat them. Leave the boney ones to the "sport" hunters.

Are you kidding? Ever try to stay overnight in a hospital? The bill is enormous! No way that bear's HMO was going to pick up the cost!

Actually, in correct accepted English, all animals are referred to as "it." Only our sentimentality toward pets, and perhaps more recently the PETA mentality, has pushed us toward saying "he" or "she" with animals.
Since English is largely a gender-neutral language, he and she are traditionally reserved for humans only.
A duck walks into a bar.
"Got any grapes?" he asks the bartender.
"Nope."

He walks up to the bartender.
"Got any nails?"
"Nope."
"Got any grapes?"
Very funny.
If you are on the Virginia side of the Delmarva Penninsula, you might was well be living in some far outback of the Ozarks!

OK OK. Calm down. take a deep breath and count to 10. I understand what you are saying and I was just giving a what if scenerio to counter the don't do it. I agree, if I were to list the best places to use a firearm, a hospital would not rank very high on the list.

Give me a freaking break. Bear walks into a hospital, he was oviously on bear drugs, probably laced honey.
He/It was just asking for it. Most likely he would not negociate, they had no choice but to get hiss smelly A$$ out.
