Yep. That's the one.
I had a feeling all day on November 4, 1980 that we would have a big win, but never dreamed it would be the margin of victory that it was. IIRC, Carter conceded at 7:30 Central Time, before the West Coast polls had closed, and we went up with a whoop, it was so exciting.
I remember even better Inauguration Day, with Reagan at the lunch in the Capitol's Statuary Hall and announcing that he had received official word of the Iranian Hostages release. I have that on tape, and still break down to this day when I replay it.
Local news here in Los Angeles reported that over 5000 people visited the library and gravesite yesterday when it reopened. I don't think any of us who care about such things need worry that the numbers of visitors will diminish anytime soon. The library will have extended hours through the July 4th holiday to accommodate the crowds. People are being invited to sign condolence books which will be presented to Mrs. Reagan. In addition, the library director was interviewed this morning, and he said that she had called him and said how overwhelmed and grateful she is with the outpouring of love from the general public. That seems to mean more to her than anything else, and seems to be sustaining her.
All of the cards, letters, signs, jars of jelly beans, and so on from the general public are being saved for Mrs. Reagan, the family, and for the library's own historical records. So I encourage anyone who's interested in doing so to send your own personal condolence card to the library. Here's the address:
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation
40 Presidential Drive
Simi Valley, CA 93065
Lastly, the weather here locally has been pleasant, in the high 70's to low 80's during the day after our customary morning low cloud cover burns off. The sunsets have been gorgeous.
So, our NY media reported 300 people showed up when the REagan library reopened. Nice to know the truth.
If it were possible, I'd be happy to refer the NY media to KCAL, Channel 9 here in Los Angeles for correct figures. My own two beady eyes watched during the 8:00 hour last night as crowds were shown walking around the library grounds and passing by the gravesite. As reporters do, the KCAL reporter asked a few people why they had come. They all had basically the same answer: Respect for RWR. Now maybe the NY media's excuse is the 3-hour time difference, so they didn't have a chance to get updated figures. [wink and grin...]
He certainly worked behind the scenes during the first Gulf War trying to get the Arab countries to stay OUT of the coalition formed to remove Saddam Hussein from Kuwait.
Despite his public image as a peace-loving regligious man, Jimmy Carter is a venomous snake (my apologies to snakes). He has tried to undercut every administration since he left office, including Clinton's. Remember his interference with North Korea?
I now have a truly good reason to visit California!
Unless their bylaws prevent them from doing so, SAG should have the good grace to either donate or lend their RWR material to the library. But I don't think we can expect graciousness from the Hollywood crowd.
Clinton SENT Carter to North Korea. Clinton could not have cared less what the result was as long as it was something that didn't require a decision or any action.
Leaving politics and Hollyweird aside, California is truly a beautiful state. Although the RWR library is a little out of the way because it's in a semi-rural area about halfway between Los Angeles and Ventura, it has been receiving large numbers of tourists every year. Those numbers will rise now that the President is resting there, and will probably rise again once the Air Force One exhibit opens next year. As far as I know, the library will be the only museum to house a plane used as Air Force One.
Thanks for the update and how so many are paying their respects .. I'm sure this is a great comfort to Nancy during this time.
Clinton sent Carter to North Korea because Carter had already been interfering in negotiations. Basically, he was going to go whether or not Clinton approved, so Clinton eventually made it a formal mission. Carter has done this sort of thing both openly and behind the backs of every president since he left office. I can't produce online sources for my assertion, because the information comes from TV documentaries I've watched. But, assuming the documentaries are factual, then what I'm telling you is accurate.
You are welcome, Mo1. According to the library director, Mrs. Reagan is stunned by and grateful for the immense outpouring of love and respect from the general public.

In my opinion Carter should have been brought up on charges.
Thanks for the confirmation, Miss Marple. We do have a federal law, the name of which escapes me, which makes it a crime for anyone but duly elected or appointed members of the executive branch to conduct foreign policy. Unfortunately, the law is rarely enforced. In fact, I don't know if it ever has been enforced, but it should be. The Constitution is unambiguous in assigning responsibility for foreign policy to the President.
But there should be a law against inviting a foreign government to interfere in a United States election, although I don't know the US Code.
