The noisy agitation over offshore "outsourcing" died down a bit. But assertions repeated with such stridency often remain believed long after they are proven false.

The original story focused on a supposedly permanent loss of high-paid jobs among computer specialists. These jobs were said to have been lost to India, rather than to cyclical business failures.

There's some folks on FR with "the chronic inability to distinguish between cyclical recessions and secular trends. "

No, these folks are right. Another Great Depression is right over the hill.

We're doomed, I tell ya! DOOMED!

in fact, the availability of low cost offshore labor is actually PREVENTING the investment in the technologies this article mentions regarding automated call centers, automated computer system management, etc. those investments would be fine, automation as a means to displacing workers is a normal part of our economy - but the cheap labor pools prevent domestic investments from taking place in those technologies.

So they believe what they hear on the news or what "everybody" is saying or the misunderstood Forrester Research study mentioned above etc. So what else is new?

it's all fine and dandy as long as it's not your job... start outsourcing lawyers and watch what happens to outsourcing...

or start bringing in H1Bs to be public school teachers - working for 60% the prevailing wage. there would be blood in the streets.

Truly.

Isn't it interesting that the Japanese are deploying technology superior to our own? China has built a MAGLEV train - while we talk about planning one. China is becoming the industrial center of the world - and we have export deficits in most areas other than aircraft, aircraft parts, and agricultural products. We have the export profile of a third world nation.

Meanwhile, the free traitors prefer to believe that all is well.

There are none so blind as those who will not see.

and commercial aircrafts will be gone soon too - since that's all Boeing, and if their 7E7 isn't a big success - they are done.

Its good that other areas of the economy are generating new jobs, and I have seen some slowdown in the blood letting in tech in the last 6 months. But that does not fundamentally change the outlook for certain classes of tech jobs that are going to go offshore - because they can, because the labor there is cheaper, and because nothing is being done to provide a disincentive to stop it.

"start bringing in H1Bs to be public school teachers"

California did this in the late 80's.....brought them in from Canada because they were having trouble finding people who could read, write, and speak english properly, or even semi-properly.

That's right. Forget the fact that America is leading the industrial world out of the recession, with growth in GDP Europe would kill for and half the unemployment.

John Kerry and his freinds here on FR KNOW that this is the worst time in America since the Great Depression.
