If Any Talk of Reagan on Rushmore, Koppel Promises Media Attack(Clinton portrait to be unveiled)

A prediction or a threat? As the plane carrying the late President Reagan arrived back at Point Mugu Naval Air Station on Friday afternoon, Ted Koppel made it clear he was appalled at the suggestion that Reagan was the "greatest President of the 20th century," complaining that would mean "hopscotching him past Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Delano Roosevelt." Koppel predicted, or threatened, that if Reagan's "supporters try to raise to him to the very heights there, and perhaps find a place for him on Mount Rushmore," that the "controversial President" who had "fairly contentious issues" in his presidency which "we've more or less overlooked" this week, "will come back."

A bit past 4:30pm PDT (7:30pm EDT) on Friday night, as ABC (the only one of the broadcast networks to go live from 7:30 to 8pm EDT) showed the plane taxiing in at Point Mugu after its flight from Maryland, Ed Meese told anchor Peter Jennings that he thought the week's events were "a fitting tribute, I think, to probably the greatest President of the 20th century."

A few minutes later, at about 4:44pm PDT, Jennings turned to Ted Koppel, who had attended the service at the Washington National Cathedral, and Koppel complained that while he could hear what was being said at the service, he couldn't see anything from his vantage point.

But then, as ABC showed him in an inset from the DC bureau over a full screen look at the plane, Koppel got to what really bothered him: "The thought that is really upper-most in my mind is when I hear Ed Meese talking about Ronald Reagan as the greatest President of the 20th century, hopscotching him past Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. I think, as was the case when Ronald Reagan was President, when there was some fairly contentious issues and he was a fairly controversial President, we've more or less overlooked much of that over the past week. But I suspect as his friends and supporters try to raise to him to the very heights there, and perhaps find a place for him on Mount Rushmore, that some of that controversy and some of the debate will come back." Jennings agreed: "No doubt about it."

Koppel can stick it where the sun don't shine. Who do these news people think they are? They have been allowed entirely too much power the last few years.

Rather than put Reagan on Mount Rushmore...which even I would question on this issue...I would rather have a giant (over 40-ft tall) statue of Ronald Reagan sitting on the back of a horse. And I'd like have the statue put somewhere within walking distance of the Washington Monument. There doesn't need to be alot of words, or fancy bricks, or bold columns, or fancy water falls.

The servicemen won the war. FDR gave away half of Europe at Yalta.
Hello?

I think they are just going to keep pushing and pushing and when we finally have had a enough, is where we will win, after all if it gets that far, they don't believe in guns.

You fail to see that the left doesn't want US to have guns, they are perfectly happy to own them themselves.

Your ignorance astounds me.

I guess since I pled ignorance I cannot challenge your rude reply. But I did ask what I thought was a reasonable question in an effort to maybe learn something.

And as for ignorance in general, I would guess that unless American History is your profession that I've read five times as many American History books as you have, though I admit I haven't spent much time reading about the Teddy Roosevelt era.

FDR led us to victory over Germany and Japan. We were not fighting with the Commies during WWII. Of course, Roosevelt misjudged Stalin.

And as for the servicemen winning the war, do you think the British servicemen won the war by themselves, or do you think maybe Churchill helped a little?

You cannot be a leader in the US without dealing with contentious issues and without being controversial.

Do you have a retriever? That's what my retriever brings me, if I neglected to bring a ball.

And we'll ignore you b@stards just like we did when he was President.

That sounds like an excellent idea, except that when viewed from the horses rear it may be mistaken as a memorial to Bill Clinton.

So glad this thread is here....I've been part of several conversations this past week on this very subject.

My understanding is that Mt. Rushmore really can't hold another face...the only open space on the rock front is too unstable. So the logical thing to do would be find another mountainside somewhere...close by in SD or even in another state.

I'd like to see a memorial created to 3 memorable presidents of the 20th century: FDR, Kennedy and Reagan. (TR is already on Rushmore, and he deserves it)

FDR: Inspirational leader during the Depression, and The Man during WWII. (His memorial in DC is too PC-bland)
JFK: Inspirational...oh,yeah...and the 1st one to publicly stand up against the Soviet Union (Ike, though a fine Pres, was a little too shy about crossing his former allies)
RWR: We have been talking about this all week. 'Nuff said.

Of course each made mistakes. Of course each had enemies and was controversial in his time. The same can be said of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, TR...the four on Rushmore.

But without a doubt, these three were beloved by Americans, and sincerely mourned at their passing. Was it charisma, or that they defined their times?

My parents loathed the policies of the New Deal, but they cried when the sad news came from Warm Springs.
Goldwater voters, both of 'em...and they cried when JFK fell in Dallas.
And have we not seen genuine grief this week from many who freely admit they did NOT support Reagan?

Perhaps this is why none of us can remember LBJ's televised State Funeral in 1973. I was around for it..in my 20's...and I LIVE in Texas..and I can't remember watching it or being emotionally affected by it. I sure remember JFK's.

So they're running footage from the FDR & JFK funerals. I don't notice CSpan trotting out films or photos from the funerals of McKinley, TR, Taft, Wilson, Hardin, Coolidge, Hoover, Truman, Eisenhower or Nixon. Such things DO exist. And can you honestly imagine Ford or Carter's last rites will have the impact on Americans that Reagan's did? Or Bush the elder? The emotional connection is just not there.

(As for Clinton, with any luck he'll be captured by a cannibal tribe during a Fact-Finding Junket to Rio de Janeiro and we won't have to deal with a State Funeral. A nice memorial service at an Arkansas BBQ joint with NO military honors...that would be about right.)

And as to the question of party affilliation on this proposed Memorial...TWO Democrats and only ONE Republican!!! Shock! Hee-hee. How many Americans could instantly tell you the party affiliation of the four on Rushmore? (Trick question...Washington had no party) Or that list of 20th Century Presidents in the paragraph above?

For that matter, how many Americans under 30 could tell you the party of FDR or JFK? (Actually, by today's political standards, JFK would probably be considered a stone-cold Conservative Republican.)

Moot point. Time diminishes the passions of party and leaves the memory of the person and the accomplishments. Some Presidents stay with us, and others fade away into the history book. So I believe it is with these three, and a second carved mountain would be just the thing. God knows, if the US budget can allocate funds to study bear poop, we can spend money on this.

Seriously. In 1942 our army was still equipped with panel delivery vans -- no armored vehicles worth anything. It took several years of round the clock work on the domestic front after we declared War to equip the Army for D Day. This country was just not ready militarily.

This was the aircraft our military was equipped with at the beginning of WWII.

That is so funny, just like my black lab Gizmo, I can't count how many times I've sat down on a pinecone, he always chucks it under my butt at the last second. I found them in my shoes, my bed and he often will lay one down in his water bowl.

I think our dogs belong to the same union. I can't guess how many times I've twisted an ankle stepping on the stuff he rolls under my feet in the dark. If he's not outside, he improvises... stuffed toys, leggos, towels, shoes ... once he brought me a spatula.

One of the guys at my work is a tennis nut, and teaches tennis after hours. He gives me the old practice balls after they're worn out for their purpose. Hence, the toes of my Nikes are usually a nice shade of slobber/mud brown.
