Rush Limbaugh, Wife Set to Divorce
Newsmax ^ | 6/11/04 | newsmax

Conservative radio commentator Rush Limbaugh announced Friday that he and his wife, Marta, are divorcing.

The Limbaughs "mutually decided to end their marriage of 10 years" and have "separated pending an amicable resolution," according to a statement released by Limbaugh's publicist.

The couple shared a $24 million oceanfront mansion in nearby Palm Beach, from where Limbaugh often broadcast his daily three-hour show.

Spokesman Tony Knight said the matter was personal and declined further comment.

It was the third marriage for both Limbaugh, 53, and his 44-year-old wife, who were wed May 27, 1994, at the Virginia home of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Thomas officiated the ceremony.

The past several months have been difficult for the politically and socially conservative Limbaugh, who announced in October that he was entering drug rehabilitation because he was addicted to prescription painkillers.

At the same time, West Palm Beach prosecutors announced they were investigating whether Limbaugh illegally went "doctor shopping" to obtain the pills. The practice refers to visiting several doctors to receive duplicate prescriptions of controlled narcotics.

Limbaugh, who has not been charged with any crime, has repeatedly fought back against the charges and negative publicity he's received over the matter.

Last month, he took out full-page ads in two Florida newspapers to attack prosecutors for mounting what he called a politically motivated investigation. He also regularly lashes out against prosecutors and reporters and defends himself during his show.

The criminal case against Limbaugh is on hold pending a decision from a Florida appeals court. It will decide whether the seizure of Limbaugh's medical records, which were taken by investigators in November, violated privacy laws.

Prosecutors say they need the records to determine whether to bring charges against Limbaugh.

Florida is an equitable distribution state, there is no magic date either. If a party can show the other party intended to divorce and only stayed married to gain time then the "equities" may deem the marital relationship over prior to any magic date theory.

It also can work the other way, if you live with someone and then get married, you can argue the equities deem marital relationship predates the marriage licence. Its all based on equity and it requires REAL proof not just he said she said. (ie a child born before the marriage)

Just seems like a semantical game to me to distinguish between them. At least I know the Tet offensive was a victory for the U.S. Many people with alleged intelligence do not.

Florida is a 50-50 asset division state. All post-marital income, property, jewelry, art collections, etc. of each party is toted up, and the assets divided equally. There's lots of trading back and forth so that things come out pretty equally in the end. This bartering can be hostile or benign depending on the two spouses' personalities.

If the parties can't arrive at or don't like an arrived-at parity, the case can go to trial. However, this is extremely rare.

During the settlement period which can be brief or take several years depending on the feistiness of the parties, the respective attorneys and the hearings judge don't even want to hear about adultery, drug-taking, alcoholism, beatings, whatever. It just doesn't enter into the divorce at all...with a few exceptions such as custody battles or if a trial does occur and a door inadvertantly gets opened on adultery by an unwary attorney.

The judge will mandate an arbitrator called in before he agrees to a trial date if there's a dispute that can't be resolved.

Any infighting, bitterness, greed or revenge is handled behind the scenes by the lawyers. The court calendars are so jammed with divorce filings, that you have to really have a unique case to get a trial at all. The divorce legal system is designed to avoid trials so it doesn't collapse.

So, don't look for hot stuff or fireworks in the Rush Limbaugh split. The long-ago day of steamy Hollywood open divorce trials are long over in Florida. Divorces here are 99% cut-and-dried because of no-fault divorce laws and equal division of assets.

It's only the money, honey.

No, never with an addict. And thankfullly no. But did go through a menopausal change and it was hell. And I've talked to other women who during the change even the sight of their husband made them angry, irational and more. Sorry, it's a fact. Ever read the book called the Pause?

found this interesting. The company that issued the press release yesterday is known, by their own acknowledgement" as " Sitrick & Co., perhaps Hollywood's most prominent crisis specialists.”

Interesting. There obviously is a crisis brewing.

Obviouisly Rush is in crisis. Interesting that he hired Black for the drug problem and now a Hollywood Elite crisis control firm for this.

If she wants to leave him, and he doesn't want to break up his marriage, the word you are looking for is "no." "No, I don't want a divorce. I can't keep you from leaving, but I won't make it easy on you. I don't believe in divorce. We promised to stay together through thick and thin, and this is just one of the thin times. It will get better. Whatever your problem is, we can work it out. Stick around, the best is yet to come."

In this day and age, if one party wants a divorce there is very little the other party can do, legally, to prevent that. One can engage in a certain amount of foot-dragging--I did--but there is a limit; sooner or later the judge briskly orders the lawyers to move the case along and stop taking up the court's time. If the one who wants to leave really wants to leave, no amount of marriage counselling is going to work because s/he won't actively try and participate.

Sometimes "Just Say No" doesn't work, sad to report. I'm speaking from experience here.

"How is that? If she wants to leave him what is he supposed to do?"

Was it her that decided to leave?...I would like to know because that would make all the difference in the world!

Amen to that. She was all for counseling, cause I was at first against it. So I capitualted and figured, what the heck. As long as I'm going, let's get my money's worth. Don't screw around with it. Work on it. Listen to what her hand picked counselor is saying. Do the assignments he gives out. Don't hold anything back. Tell him about the things that I shouldn't have done. And let him know that I'm serious about saving the marriage.

Well that went over like a lead balloon. She saw that as ganging up on her. She dug in. Refused to do the assignments. Refused to try to find the middle ground. And was very upset that he didn't tell her I was a jerk and he couldn't believe that she hung in as long as she did and her complaints, whether real or imagined, were only what needed to be addressed and that I should be taken to the basement, handcuffed and whipped every session. Needless to say, and unfortunately, the marrige ended after 25 years at her request.

You won't get that from no university.

I find it humorous that, in your post, you are opining about whether or not a person has been educated.

Well, happy anniversary to da twoayous!

(25 years ago today my bride and I graduated from high school together.)

I, too, wish Rush could find personal contentment. To have a great spouse, though, you have to be one first.

OUCH!

He's such a bloody capitalist. LOL

The internet broadcast probably doesn't include the commercials. He also has a subscription newsletter which includes access to much more info, daily sources, and archived shows, plus the video cam and the occasional extra, off the air hour he does online.

I am not a subscriber BTW

Couldn't you log on to a station broadcasting his show? He's on some 600 radio stations.

That was the idea, but let's remember that we're talking about Rush. For obvious reasons I have no interest in discussing my intelligence or my level of education.

I have always said Democrat voters fell into 2 categories
1) the elite and 2) losers. If you don't count among the intelligencia you are a loser in their playbook.

Back to the topic of Rush. It would not be easy to stand in this man's shadow even if the money were good.
On one hand he is a major public figure and wanted or not you are going to be thrust into the limelight willingly or unwillingly. You would also have to have a substantial volume of inner strenght to avoid being overwhelmed by his never silenced opinions. You could feel awfully small in his presence and money wouldn't make you feel better about it.

"He's such a bloody capitalist. LOL"

It wasn't Rush that made the decision to start charging for the internet stream. All of the syndicated hosts with Premiere Radio Networks (owned by Clear Channel a.k.a. "The Borg") made their hosts start charging for the "exclusive" content on their sites. For awhile Rush had links to the sties where you could still listen for free but Randy and the boys at CC made him stop.

It's probably contractural, i.e., stations that broadcast his show both over the air and on their websites are stations that have older contracts, pre-dating Rush's own 24/7 site.

Stations with newer contracts aren't allowed to air him on their websites too.

His 24/7 membership is $40 a year and there are no commercials - you get the parodies instead or music. Also get a webcam - much of the time. Access to his hilarious parodies etc., archived shows etc.
