LISBON (Reuters) - Portuguese police arrested 15 Arabs on Friday in Porto, the city that hosts the first game of the Euro 2004 football championships on Saturday, police said.
The arrests "were related to something international, but I don't know what", a police spokesman said.
Private TSF radio quoted police as saying there were signs five of the people, who come from various Arab countries, had links to a terrorist cell.
The arrests were a joint operation by the investigative Judiciary Police and Portugal's Security Intelligence Service (SIS).
Publico newspaper reported that SIS received a warning from Dutch intelligence about one of those arrested.
Its website said Dutch authorities alleged he was linked to a radical Islamic movement.
He had been in Portugal for three months and tried to obtain a permanent residence permit, Publico said. A spokesman for the Dutch embassy had no information about the arrests.
SIC television and Publico said 14 people were arrested. The TV network said four would face charges of carrying false documents and the rest would be deported.
A spokesman for the Interior Ministry declined to comment.
Portugal will play Greece on Saturday in Porto's Dragon Stadium in the first game of the European championships

The European soccer championships start tomorrow in Portugal, an ally of the United States in the War on Terror. This is one of the largest sporting events in the world, surpassed only by the World Cup and Olympics, and could be a possible target for terrorists. The Italian and English national teams have been under unprecedented security due to their nation's support of the United States.

The arrests "were related to something international, but I don't know what", a police spokesman said. Well, Al Qaeda happens to be "something international."

Here in the World, those of US (or US extraction) who are expatriots, think the Super Bowl and the NCAA March Maddness top those so-called championships:)

well, in terms of viewer statistics I think the rankings are:
- The Soccer world Cup
- The Olympics
- The European championships
- The Cricket World Cup

The arrests "were related to something international, but I don't know what", a police spokesman said. Now there's a man on top of his game.

I know what he's saying but that statement looks sort of Clintonian, or almost like a good tagline.

Think we'd take too much crap here if we started one big thread for all of Euro 2004? I don't think so.
There's a lot of soccer guys around here.
The start today, with Greece beating Portugal, and Spain 1-0 with luck against Russia, could mean we're in for a great tournament.
I bet STFrancis is in for sure.
