The interesting story of Ronan Tynan(tenor who sang 'Ave Maria' at the Reagan Funeral)
Barnes and Noble review ^ | earlier | someone named EJ Johnson

Posted on 06/11/2004 10:26:13 PM PDT by Diddle E. Squat

"If there is a more remarkable figure in the music world than Ronan Tynan, would you please stand up? Athlete, doctor, and world-class singer, Tynan, who found international fame as a member of the popular trio, the Irish Tenors, makes his solo debut with My Life Belongs to You. Released along with his autobiography, My Life 'till Now, the album is yet another striking achievement from this truly unstoppable talent. Tynan was born with a lower- limb disability, and his legs were later amputated. Recovering quickly, he became a champion athlete, piling up 18 gold medals and 14 world records in international disabled athletes' events in the early 1980s. Not content with that success, Tynan went on to earn an M.D., specializing in sports injuries, and started to study singing in 1992. Astonishingly, little more than a year later, he won in quick succession a series of prominent vocal competitions, culminating with the International Operatic Singing Competition in Maumarde, France....His voice is full and rich, but thanks to his late start at vocal training, it retains a charming freshness, and the popular songs here don't suffer, as they sometimes do, from the overbearing sound of a fully developed operatic voice. So what's the latest challenge for this indefatigable Irishman? Horse racing! He's already competed in the Dublin Horse Show, and judging from Tynan's past, that's only the beginning."

I think his amazing performance for the Reagan funeral will do for Ronan Tynan's singing career what Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's fine solo at the Chuck and Di wedding did for hers: introduce him to a huge new segment of fans in the American population who weren't aware of him before.

After he sang and as the procession was leaving the cathedral, the last musical piece that was played by the Marine Orchestra---does anyone know what piece that was?
Thanks

At the very least, Ave Maria is on Tynan's Christmas album:

Do you happen to know the name of recessional hymn? I don't think I've heard it before, but it's absolutely beautiful.

I keep trying to convince my husband that it's not just innattention or hyperactivity, but Renaissance syndrome. He's not buying it.

Good thing he's a saint.
