Newsday's Breslin: Reagan Funeral 'Cheap, Utterly Distasteful'

America's largest circulation suburban daily newspaper, Newsday, wins the prize for ugliest bit of Reagan-bashing on the day of the great man's funeral, publishing a bile-filled screed by columnist Jimmy Breslin that trashed the American icon as "a callous man" who "hated children."

"I don't see how anybody can summon grief [over Reagan's death]," Breslin observed. "His whole weeklong funeral is cheap, utterly distasteful American publicity."

The Reagan-bashing writer usually inhabits Newsday's editorial section. But in a remarkably bizarre editorial decision, Newsday decided to move up Breslin's hate-screed to page A8, in the midst of its news section, right behind a page headlined: "Paying Respects to Ronald Reagan."

Newsday's Breslin tribute to Reagan continued thusly:

"He was a callous man with a smile who cut taxes in 1981 and left [New York] city and state without funds for such things as help for dependent children. He proudly hurt the boroughs of this city more than anyone before or after him. If you live in Brooklyn, the record shows that Ronald Reagan hated children."

Acutally, Reagan's economic policies were a boon for New York - both city and state.

"Before the Gipper came along, New York, the city, was an economic disaster area," noted New York Post columnist Robert Ward on Friday." But during his tenure, "Wall Street boomed, and thus, so did city and state revenues."

New York City added 254,000 jobs and hundreds of thousands of new residents, Ward noted. Their taxes helped fund the war on crime, rebuild infrastructure and minister to thousands afflicted with AIDs.

Most of which, apparently, went unnoticed by Breslin, who proclaimed that a suitable memorial for Reagan would be to put his face on a $3 dollar bill.

Newsday's editors liked the idea so much they used it to headline his column.

I hate the New York rag Newsday - it's made up of left wing goons who only attack the United States - I don't know how it's survived, but I have not so much faith in the state and people of New York - the idiots that elected Cuomo, Bela Abzug, Shumer, and now Hillary! Breslin is the worst of the Kennedy generation of Democrats that refuse to crawl back under their rocks! I hope he dies a lonley alcoholic death - God forgive me for saying that. Breslin is a true scumbag! I will never forget his pro Castro rants. Newsday is also a very pro Castro paper always using its editorial and columnists to bash Republicans and Cuban Americans. It's right up there with the New York Slimes in Cuban American and patriot bashing.

My apoligies to Irish people, there are decent ones that I have known - but Breslin is a type of in your face bigoted bully that I have always encountered growing up in NYC.

Jimmy Breslin is a scum bag

I understand how you feel. I have the same reaction. But I am going to try, in the future when I feel like this, to emulate the Gipper's response to the man who shot him. My anger toward those who would destroy our country, demean our heros, and diminish our Savior feels very small and petty today after seeting the funeral.

I pray that Jimmy and Hillary and Bill and even OBL will find their way back to their Savior. They are all unhappy, twisted souls that, like me, need God's grace. May they receive it in abundance. I also pray, like RR, that they will lose their worldly struggles, and in losing, win their souls.

Reading this headline gave me the same impression as I had last night when I saw Christopher Hitchens on Joe Scarborough's show. These guys are the "bad boys", and that's the role they enjoy playing. Hitchens had a ridiculous "bad boy" expression on his face - devilish, mischievous, he even looked pouty! - I saw it for a few seconds and thought how silly he looked. So I didn't watch it. Hitchens has long ago stopped having any credibility for me. I wonder why Scarborough is still promoting him.

You can tell the difference between a Republican and a dem. One is smiling and optimistic and the other is doom and gloom.

Breslin has never let the truth stand in the way of his convictions.

Funny how you don't hear so much about the disgusting racial slurs "Mr. Compassion" Breslin heaped on an Asian reporter... got him suspended. World Net Daily has story on it, I believe Ann Coulter also mentions it in "Slander." Breslin is indeed a lying hateful thug, and his nasty bigotry, pettiness, and spiritual emptiness makes him completely unable even to begin comprehending someone like President Reagan.

Yes, and they hate the fact that Reagan presided over those greedy, selfish, mean-spirited '80s that the enlightened and loving and caring '60s Hippies love to hate.

...it will be very ugly in the next few weeks

Yep, totally. Breslin, Rather and all the lib media are incensed that no one cares about Abu Ghraib for an entire week. Who cares if a great American president is dead? Don't Americans know that Reagan hated children and gays? Don't they know Reagan had absolutely nothing to do with all the good things that happened while he sat in office?

Next, they are salivating about Sy Hersh's claims of abuse of Iraqi children. Supposedly there are pics and videos. They are absolutely gleeful at the thought. They think that if they can just focus on Abu Ghraib until November, send every household a free Michael Moore DVD and pray the WMD stays hidden until then, even a deadwood like Kerry might actually win. It will be ugly 24/7 from here on out.

Jimmy Breslin

A very small man, Jimmmy is like a barking dog chasing the funeral procession. No one is listening, and no one cares what he has to say.

Can't you just see all the libs tightly crossing those arms, squeezing themselves up w/a smirk on the face, like a kid who isn't getting his way. All upset about the "love-fest" we're having..... ;-)
