From his perspective Ronald Reagan was the best thing that ever happened to him

During one of the Reagan retrospective shows on one of the cable channels, they replayed part of a debate-style event with some historians, including Condi Rice, when she was still provost at Stanford.

Someone was trying to say that the Soviet Union would have collapsed on its own, but Condi disagreed. Her point was, as she stated "without Reagan, Gorbachev never comes to power".

In other words, without Reagan standing tall against communism and exposing it and the Soviet Union as the "evil empire", someone like Gorbachev never even gets the chance.

Well (as Reagan would say), if he's not a Christian, he appears to be on his way.

I'm reminded of Reagan's quip, back in his first term, about why he hadn't met with any Soviet leader: "They keep dying on me."

Wouldn't it be great if, right when he touched the casket, Reagan had pre-arranged to have a recorder play, "Mr. Gorbachev, take down your hand!".

LOL! I think that the Gipper (and Gorby too) would have laughed at your words as long and as hard as I did.

Then we have Kerry, the faux Catholic wise guy. Going through the (religious) motions for photo opportunities

I have it on good authority that God is not amused.

In America, you cannot blame on President Reagan that which the people are responsible for tacitly endorsing. Judicial social activist judges ... look at the fiat judges.

I believe it was Krushchev who converted to Russina Orthodox before his death, after having a vision from his long-deceased grandmother.

I had heard that about Krushchev but not about Gorby.

Perhaps he is but at least a Russian lefty or communist for that matter doesn't have as his primary focus the destruction of his own country so they are far less despicable than our own lefties, communists, 'rats, socialists, etc.

That's only because he already succeeded in destroying his own country.

Gorby is trying to revisionist history Reagan from the great communicator to "the man who listened to gorbachev".

IOW he obeyed the socialists and let gorbachev take down the belin wall. How much do you want to be that the left will try and say reagan KNEW the wall was comming down and was just hogging glory.

I have no doubt that many of those present or paying respects have not respect or love for reagan. They are there only because they HAVE to be, the price of not doing it is too high. Besides they get to bask in Reagan's glory.

Gobachev was appointed specifically to be the USSR answer to RWR. He existed, he got his job BECAUSE of Reagan.

He was supposed to be the point man of the USSR charm offensive.

Gorby came on the scene as someone who wanted to reform it in order to keep from being hopelessly left behind by the American econonmy so that th Soviet military program could no longer keep up. They had passed the point of diminishing returns and the politburo realized they were out of answers. They turned to the relatively young man and said make the economy work. Gorbachev was just as ruthless a communist as were the rest. Otherwise he would not have been in a position to be given the job. He tried and failed to institute freemarket reforms to bring in more money to be able to keep up militarily. He did not know how to do it. He failed. He determined to not go down with the ship.
The Chicoms learned some things from Gorbachev and have had a better run. They also benefit from a culture that will not challenge the empire. They will fail. Their economy will hit a ceiling beyond which it cannot rise without adopting Western free market systems. That means the business class must learn to do business as if it has a Judaeo roots.

I can say that the gravitational constant is 1/2 it's value with as much aplomb and authority as liberals do with their history but for some reason am still stifled in my attempts to dunk a basketball with Jordan like authority...
