Arrival at Andrews Air Force Base scheduled for 5 P.M. EDT.
Beginning of procession: 16th and Constitution at 6:00 P.M.
---------
The procession begins at 16 th Street and Constitution Avenue with the ceremonial transfer of remains of former President Ronald Reagan from a hearse to a horse-drawn caisson for the processional to the Capitol. The casket transfer will take place at 6 p.m. and caisson continues east with formal military escort.
The public will be able to pay final respects while the remains lie in state in the Capitol rotunda from 7:00 p.m. through Friday, June 11, 2004 at 9:30 a.m.
A caisson was used by the horse-drawn artillery. The Army Song (not a fight song at all) comes from that scenario.
LOL!
I dont know the term for it, but the stand that the coffin will be on was used for Lincoln funeral.
Have we settled on which is the least annoying coverage?
I heard that (the boots in stirrups backwards, on horse) represented a soldiers LAST ride.....not that they were "fallen."
You know there is going to be a crowd number comparison between this procession and Kennnedy's.
I had it years ago... It gets depressing to pay too much attention to them.
Wonderful photos.
Thanks so much.
I saw that .. Alan did pretty good with him
They are so clueless..
"He was not an intellectual"" edmund morris on cbs...
they are a disgrace..
No, a caisson is used for artillery ammunition and supply transport, a modified carriage or cart.
Those signs are great!
I heard on TV it symbolizes that the owner won't be wearing them again.
Stamina and courage by every soldier, sailor airman and marine.
thanks. that's neat. still not clear to me why the boots facing backwards symbolizes a last ride, but that's cool. I saw a funeral procession at arlington w/ a caisson once when I was visiting a friend's grandfather's grave. It was beautiful.
Washington (AP) - The US Capitol building was breifly evacuated earlier today. The exact cause has not yet been released. But those inside the Capitol had initially feared that a chemical or biological attack had taken place. Those fears have now subsided, as it seems the cause was Senator Hillary Rodham-Clinton (D-NY) let one fly.
Normally, the passing of wind in the US Capitol building is a common event. However, when combining the fact that women hold it in forever (therefore causing god-awful nausiating farts), and that the Senator from New York has, according to several accounts of those who had met the Senator that she had "something up her *ss", and by some accounts whatever it was may have crawled up and died
I heard the boots were backwards signifying the rider will never ride again.
Thanks for the ping. The procession this morning was very awesome, emotional .....
A little factoid or two while we are waiting:
All U.S. Army installations with troops and guns join in a salute that began Monday with the firing of one gun every half-hour at each base, from reveille to retreat. On Friday, each installation will participate in a 21-gun salute at noon, firing once a minute. The day will end with a 50-gun salute at each base, fired every five seconds, immediately following the lowering of the flag.
In Washington, two 105mm howitzers will sound their booming 21-gun salute when Reagan's casket arrives at the Capitol on Wednesday evening.
