Frustrated liberals, angry at having to spend an entire week watching the nation pay tribute to the man they derided alternately as "an amiable dunce" and a heartless autocrat, are now claiming that Bill Clinton was actually a more popular president than Ronald Reagan.
"In truth, Ronald Reagan was never as popular as he is being presented to be with Americans," writes Slate Magazine's Eric Alterman.
"As president, [he] was never even as popular as Bill Clinton during the period of Clintons impeachment," argues the disgruntled Democrat.
For evidence, Alterman cites a Gallup poll that tracks approval ratings for Clinton, Reagan, Carter and both Bushes to back his claims. The same poll is touted prominently on Democrats.com, a web site run by former Clinton White House staffers and DNC veterans.
Unfortunately for Alterman and the rest of the Reagan-haters, some of us still remember what the voters said when they actually got a chance to make their will known at the polls.
Clinton, for instance, never won more than 49 percent of the vote, managing that feat in 1996. And he probably never would have been president at all without Ross Perot acting as a Republican spoiler in 1992, when Clinton squeaked in with just 43 percent of the vote.
Reagan, on the other hand, trounced his two Democratic opponents in 44 and 49 state landslides.
In fact, no president in U.S. history has ever gotten more votes than Reagan did in 1984, despite the fact that the nation's population has grown by more than 30 million in the last twenty years.

What's funny is that Reagan could have won Minnesota, but didn't want to campaign seriously there to embarass Mondale totally.
Clinton was popular, but not respected.
Girls who are tramps in high school are popular, too. They aren't respected, either.
Reagan was both popular and respected. That's the difference.

LOVE IT.

Liars! Clinton NEVER ACHIEVED A MAJORITY VOTE!
Pray for W and Our Awesome Troops
Welcome to Amerika-2004.
In consolation, Mondale did get 85.4% of the vote in DC.
In their sickening and jaded democratic way of thinking, Eric Alterman and Bill Clintoon still fail to realize that it's not how popular you are, it's what you accomplished while occupying the "Office Of The President" that truly matters to Americans (in general) and Historians (in particular).LOL and SLAP!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Funniest thing I've read today.
Difference between being talked about a lot and being popular because you are liked.
Alterman is pathetic. He really sounds like a hater. He is using a GAllup poll provided by the biased liberal media to make his point. Eric Alterman is a small, petty, douche bag.
Hmmm... Is that why Clintoilet couldn't get even 50% of the vote and Reagan won in the two greatest landslides of American history?
OK. Got it.
He lost Minnesota by about 3000 votes and could have won it too if he stopped by to campaign, but didn't want to humiliate Mondale.
Reagan pretty muched passed on d day.
His death may end up doing more to win this "generation's" normandy (the war on terrorism and lefty totalitarianism), than we could even imagine right now.
This passing, has reactivated a deep reservoir in hearts of Americans. It may well establish a beach head that was in danger of being seriously over run by a viscous and united enemy on two fronts, the leftists worldwide and the islamaniac fascists.
As one freeper said, even in Ronnie Reagan's passing, he was "sticking it to the left." and that may be exactly what we see.
God bless you Mr. President. We knew you far too few years.
Until we meet again, somewhere beyond the horizon... God Bless You.
alterman is a diseased pus bag....
(correction)
I love that he is roasting in his own gravy of bile and vomit...
Me too.
It has to be a bitch to be a putz like Alterman. I'm glad he has to live with himself.
