6/7/04: AWB renewal now on Senate calendar.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) has once again introduced legislation to renew the so-called "assault weapons" ban. S.2498 was introduced last week, and, by using a "nuclear option" referred to as Rule XIV, has gotten the bill placed on the Senate calendar.
As a Senate educational article on the subject puts it,
"Most bills are routinely referred to the committee with appropriate jurisdiction as soon as they are introduced. But if a Senator plans to introduce a bill and believes that the committee to which it would be referred will be unsympathetic, Rule XIV permits the Senator to bypass the standing committee system altogether and have the bill placed directly on the Calendar of Business, with exactly the same formal status the bill would have if it had been the subject of extensive hearings and exhaustive mark-up meetings in committee."
The article goes on to say that this option is considered a last resort by Senators, because it "undermines the committee system as a whole and because they do not wish to encourage a practice that can be used against their own committees."
So, Sen. Feinstein and her 11 co-sponsors (the usual suspects) have thrown down the gauntlet, and a true showdown is shaping up. Once again, we must contact our Senators, ESPECIALLY those who voted against the AWB renewal amendment several months ago, to stand firm in their opposition to this ill-conceived and proven ineffective idea. Because the AWB renewal has enough votes in the Senate to pass, a filibuster is likely the only way it can be stopped there
The Senators who voted against the recent amendment renewing the ban need our support and encouragement to stand their ground, as it the rhetoric put forth by the anti-gun side will undoubtedly be intense and viscous.
It is unclear when S.2498 will come up for consideration, so let's get busy NOW. You can see how your Senators voted recently on the AWB here. You can find your Senators' contact info here.
I say there's a 50/50 chance it'll go through. I hope I'm wrong. Losing this would, to me, be worse than losing the white house.
Do you think there are a couple of Rats that would cross over. It drives me nuts because I am a New Yorker. Chuckie in fact does not live too far from me. Cannot count on New York at all in the senate though there might be a few Ratsw upstate in the house that would be afraid to stop it.
I hope we find out soon exactly when this vote is for. We need to hit this harder than hell, like the last one.
During the campaign, he said he would sign it, so he will bet beaten up by the media and called a liar by moderates if he vetoes it. If he signs it, the NRA wing of the party will sit on their hands this fall.
So9
The answer is yes - those in tight elections in November from not-liberal states - and the first democrat I see not voting for the AWB renewal (besides Zell Miller) is Tom Daschle...
I just bet you are right...hope so. That cheers me up a bit.
Do you actually think that is going to do any good?
"BOHICA!" screamed the e-mail alert. "Bend over, here it comes again!"
It was a familiar story. Politicians were about to pull yet another colossal act of betrayal, about to break yet another compromise with gun owners, about to put thousands more citizens at risk of prison for obscure technical violations of law.
BOHICA has become a way of life for people who care about the Bill of Rights, especially the Second Amendment.
So what did the group sending the urgent e-mail alert beg everybody to do? "Call your representative!" -- again -- "Write the governor!" -- again -- "Tell your friends to call their representatives!" --again.
Let's be realistic: Do we honestly believe an arrogant group of known liars and oathbreakers is suddenly going to morph into Patrick Henry just because they receive yet another batch of desperate, angry pleas from people who've been on the losing side of every gun-law battle since the National Firearms Act was passed in 1934?
"BOHICA," indeed! If you keep bending over like that, they'll keep doing "it" again.
Daschle going against schumer and feinstein/boxer on this issue seems nearly impossible.
We shouldn't even need daschle. Hopefully our side can put up a fight and filibuster it ok, and kill it outright in the House. If not, I don't really care much which party wins this Nov..
Time remaining:

14 weeks, sigh.. And we won't be in the clear until the fat lady sings either. Although he we knock it down this time, it's probably safe to say it's dead.
Just gotta take it out now.

Mrs. FEINSTEIN (for herself, Mr. WARNER, Mr. SCHUMER, Mr. DEWINE, Mr. LEVIN, Mr. CHAFEE, Mr. DODD, Mr. JEFFORDS, Mrs. BOXER, Mrs. CLINTON, Mr. REED, and Mr. LAUTENBERG) introduced the following bill; which was read the first time
June 4, 2004
Read the second time and placed on the calendar
Now is the time to contact especially the fence-sitters and flip-floppers, like Montana's Conrad Burns, New Mexico's Bingaman and Domenici, Maine's Snowe and Collins, etc.
Remind them of what happened to anti-gun congresscritters in '94, and that it can happen again, regardless of party affiliation!
As such, I can only assume that DiFi DOESN'T want the sheeple to see the language in this Bill!! After all, If you can't read it, you can't logically oppose it.
Anyway as some have mentioned, it'll never get out of the House. That is as long as "The Hammer" is still Majority Leader. But wait.. that Texas DA is trying to indict him, and THEN he'd have to give up his leadership position. Hmmm, what a coincidence.....
Check my 35 for the bill.
"It'll probably be time to turn in the semi-auto rifles shortly after kerry wins."
Maybe yours...
