Once a Democratic stronghold, Northeast Florida is now, without question, Republican country.
When local politicians and experts discuss that drastic shift over the past 20 years, they point to one familiar face -- that of former President Ronald Reagan, who died Saturday at 93.
"He's the one that started that movement, here and in the whole state," said Bill Taylor, who chaired the state Republican Party from 1974 to '80. "He had the faith, and it was contagious."
Reagan, politicians and observers say, made it acceptable for local officials to be Republicans. The former president's message of keeping money in people's pockets and strengthening the military resonated in the South and in Northeast Florida with Democrats who saw the national party drifting further to the left.

Just check out Ted Rall's latest blog about Reagan. Its unprintable here but one look at it and y'all will understand why much of the country has turned against the Left.
Keeping (U.S.) money in (U.S.) pockets?
That would be a laughing stock today in light of the literally BILLIONS of dollars in lost revenue funnelled off to Mexico from migrant workers via U.S. and other money orders each year.
HINT: Go to any local post office on a "Mexican" payday and just observe the cash flowing across the counter - STRAIGHT FROM THE UNITED STATES TO MEXICO.
Money "staying" in the United States in 2004 is a complete, utter political joke. And Mexico is laughing all the way to the bank.
$69 Billion a year is what we are paying for the illegals.
And why there ain't no turning back.
I grew up, and still live, in Atlanta. In 1980 I was in 7th grade and we had a mock election. There were some 800 kids at the school and the final tally was around 798-2 for Reagan. Granted, this was a phitebrad community but it was still Carter's home state. That was pretty impressive.
Believe it or not (and contrary to Confederate and neo-Confederate propaganda), some of us in the South have been Republicans since Lincoln.
Southern bump
all THREE of you.

You know, even though I've come to realize the error of my ancestors on their rejection of the Biblical legitimacy of slavery (and polygyny and concubinage too, btw), the self-righteousness of you neo-Confederates never fails to disgust me. And regardless of slavery, your Calhouninan "compact theory" is so ludicrous that even Pat Buchanan shot it down in The Great Betrayal.
My post was not aimed at you, but I can tell that you and your brethren will insist on playing "gotcha last!" until I give up in exasperation. Very well. "You win." Now are you satisfied?
You should have gone to the New York Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner to listen to the Ketchup Lady.
Washington, Adams, and Hamilton forever. Jefferson should have gone to the guillotine of the Jacobins he admired so much.

I'm a Reagan fan, but LBJ deserves credit for the South turning Republican.
i've NEVER actually met one.
to my knowledge there are only PALEO-Confederate partisans, scalawags (TURNCOATS & TRAITORS to their native south) & neutrals (mostly newcomers) in the southland.
as for me & my house, we serve the Lord & dixie and have for over 150 YEARS! (that's anything but "neo".)

I hate LBJ as the big-government author of the War on Poverty, repurcussions of which are still hurting us. On the other hand, I will give LBJ that he forced through the Civil Rights Act. Some of that conservative Democrat horror was that result. Thankfully, the Republican party did not become the anti-Civil Rights party.

you'll note that the media doesn't attack the DIMocRATS for having a KKK lifemember in their US Senate delegation- byrd gets a PASS because he's a DIM.
can you imagine what the leftist media wouls say if we were unlucky enough to have him in OUR party????? wouldn't be pretty.

There is absolutely no need whatsoever in our arguing. I will change nothing nor profit either one of us (unless you just enjoy childish argument). My ancestors (on all four sides of my family) were Southern Lincoln Republicans. Deal with it.
Good-bye.
i PITY you, though it's not your fault, that your ancestors chose UNwisely.
go do some reading from other than REVISIONIST sources & come back to talk. there is HOPE for you.

Elite opinion will punish Republican on the gay marriage issue. After all, there are conservativish elites and regular people who do honestly see it that way - as a civil rights issue. It's a deep societal issue, not just a rights issue. We have to be Reaganesque and stand our ground. There! I did bring it back to Reagan!
