Noonan: Reagan Commemoration Driving Media Nuts
NewsMax.com ^ | 07 June 2004 | Staff Reports

Posted on 06/06/2004 9:47:26 PM PDT by txradioguy

Reporters who regularly slammed Ronald Reagan while he was president are quietly seething now that they're forced to mouth platitudes about the man's greatness, former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan said Sunday night.

"[Journalists] are willing, over the next few days, to concede what is so obvious that they have to concede it - his personal goodness, etc.," Noonan told Matt Drudge on his radio show.

But with a solid week of commemorations for the conservative icon still ahead, liberal reporters will barely be able to contain themselves, she predicted.

"I'll bet they start pulling a few political [stunts] - kind of letting their biases out a little bit more. And I'll tell you, there's going to be an explosion next weekend [after Reagan is buried].

"That will mean that the elite journalistic media will have gone through seven days of talking kindly about Reagan," said Noonan. "I would say that by next Friday night, they're going to blow."

**Even though I thought Shep Smith was walking a fine line of bashing Pres. Reagan last night**

ah yes pretty boy Shep...have seen him push the envelope before. Sorry to hear he had trouble maintaining. Of all FOX news shows, his is the one I turn off - just don't care for the format or him.

>>...But with a solid week of commemorations for the conservative icon still ahead, liberal reporters will barely be able to contain themselves...<<

Same thing happened after September 11. The snakes had to slither back into thier holes while the REAL America surfaced.

They've come out since then with a vengenance.

For any Lord of the Rings fans: The news media is like Grima Wormtongue and America is like King Theoden.

The spell was broken for a time after 9/11 and America woke up. But now Grima is whispering again into our ears.

I heard Peggy on Drudge last night talking about it.

You have to check out Drudge, he has the audio to President Reagan's speech at a Prayer Breakfast in 1984. He speaks of religion and politics. It is like it was meant for right now.

Plus this and the D-Day stories are sure going to cramp the libs style pushing their precious Abu Grabass stories to later pages and segments, where it should have been to begin with

I have been wrestling with the death of President Reagan this past week and I think, if nothing else, I can give some insight into liberal-think and Ronald Reagan.

For when Reagan was President I was a liberal of the highest order. So was my husband.

Yes, a couple of aging hippies we are, but both now passionate conservatives. So tentatively I bring up the subject of Ronald Reagan because those were the days when we would NEVER have cast a vote or said a kind word about him.

Our vitriol was not, in those days, as hateful and mean as the libs of today, but we did, as expected, dislike any conservative and there was nothing Reagan could do that would impress either one of us. We were cool and way smarter than him.

So I did some thinking about my liberal memories of Reagan and I'm vague. I wasn't quite as political as I am now but I did have the mentality of a liberal at the time. As I recall, my mental image of Reagan was that he was not really the President, that his administration was basically a committee type of affair. I definitely recall thinking he was a war monger and very dangerous. Understand this is not reality I'm talking about here, just my memory of liberal-think.

"I didn't much care for Reagan," my husband said at my request for his feelings about his death. I knew he would say that. He was a liberal at the time.

As for myself, hell I marched on Washington the day he was nominated, wearing green in protest of his supposed intentions to turn back all the social gains of feminists.

On the day he was nominated they released the Iran hostages and I remember thinking what a public relations crock that was.

As for the Soviet Union and the Berlin wall thing, I remember thinking how stupid to tell Gorbechev to tear down a wall....any idiot could have said that. And I certainly never understood why he got elected twice in a landslide. The wise *I* never voted for him.

"I wasn't crazy about the Iran-Contra thing," husband replied to my query as to why he didn't like Reagan.

I, like most liberals then and today, didn't understand Iran-Contra at all but I knew that Reagan did something bad and what could we expect?

The media was in a frenzy about it is all I remember and in my liberal heart I knew they were on to something. The media counts on people like me to hear their sound bytes and conclude evil when none is there.

Since his death I have listened to every pundit and read all the ink on President Reagan and I feel sooooo bad. Because everything said about Reagan can be said about our current President and I think the world of George Dubya.

So why was I so down on Reagan? Because I was a liberal. It's how they think. Read my tagline.

I really wish I had taken the time to be fair to this great man for now I know that he had the best interests of this country at heart. And the country loved him.

I always wondered why. Now I know. And I know how an idealology can blind you to reality.

NEVER AGAIN!

And"blow" they will. Already CNN is talking about what a prince Kerry is to put his campaign on hold for five days (no doubt afraid he will misspeak again and again). Talking about the absence of Kerry's name in the paper, every chance they get this morning.

Last night Peggy Noonan was on MSNBC with Chris Matthews. He indicated that they would discuss something Peggy said right after the commercial. Chris said "you used to say that Ronald Reagan never made a decision without thinking about how John Wayne would handle the situation" (I'm paraphrasing here, badly). Anyway, Peggy said that she never said that. Chris insisted that she did say it. She said again that she never said it. They went to a commercial and she wasn't with him when he returned. I fell asleep shortly after that and don't know if she was on again or walked off mad. But, I do know she wasn't on immediately after the commerical. I hope she walked off the set!

It sure will be great to see Katie Colonic in the morning ( and all week ) as she has to grit her teeth and twist her colon to act like she's saying nice things about President Reagan. She may just want to call in in sick.

Perky Katie will have ground her teeth down to stubs by the end of the week. I'm sure she'll have to be fitted for dentures after this is all over.

Maybe she can do that live on TV as well.

Yup. And thanks Ronnie for knocking OJ, J-Lo, Scott Peterson and JFK out of the headlines this weekend.

I saw a little "vignette" while flipping through the channels yesterday. Discovery Times Channel: Sam Donaldson speaking on Reagan said that if someone was able to get through the secret service and sit down w/ Reagan and tell him that they were falling on hard times, that Reagan would give the shirt off his back to them. Donaldson continued, and then Reagan would turn around and sign legislation to put them on the street, put poor people on the street, close schools, etc. and not see any contradiction in doing so.

Not an exact quote but pretty close. Naturally, I was enraged.

"I hope this backfires on the Dems." I'm praying that it does! If they start dancing on his grave...it will blow up in their faces bigger than the Wellstone Pep Rally!

I have a mental image of a stupefied Bill Schneider (CNN) shaking his head, wondering why it blew up on them rather than us. His prediction is that since Wellstone's funeral hurt the democrats, Presdident Reagan's is sure to hurt the Republicans.
