I posted this article today as a tribute, because the book mentioned in this NavySeals.com article seems so fascinating.
Even people I know who were not big Reagan fans were quick today to acknowledge his success at ending Communism and cutting taxes.
So, I did some research and one thing that kept coming up was that his divorce from Jane Wyman was based in part on acrimony between them that resulted from their talk about Communism. I thought that was really interesting. Then I found the Navy Seals article, above.
The book praising Reagan and mentioned in this article above is described as follows on amazon.com:
Book Description
Reagans War is the story of Ronald Reagans personal and political journey as an anti-communist, from his early days as an actor to his years in the White House. Challenging popular misconceptions of Reagan as an empty suit who played only a passive role in the demise of the Soviet Union, Peter Schweizer details Reagans decades-long battle against communism.
Bringing to light previously secret information obtained from archives in the United States, Germany, Poland, Hungary, and Russiaincluding Reagans KGB fileSchweizer offers a compelling case that Reagan personally mapped out and directed his war against communism, often disagreeing with experts and advisers. An essential book for understanding the Cold War, Reagans War should be read by open-minded readers across the political spectrum.
And, here's the book:

Great book. I highly recommend it to Freepers (and to anyone else for that matter).

This helps to explain the "compassion" demonstrated for President Reagan's death over at DU. Still the little anarchists...

Schweizer reveals new KGB files that Soviet and other intelligence agencies tracked Reagan during his entire career and took extraordinary steps to prevent his political rise. I read this book last year and highly recommend it.
Anyone who doubts the fact that the Soviets didn't want Reagan to win should read this book, as it documents it the Soviet involvement not only in US elections, but in European elections also.
The Soviets were unable to stop Reagan from becoming president, but they did manage to stop his ideological successor, Larry McDonald.

FYI, another good book on Reagan is "Reagan: In His Own Hand".
This is a collection of letters, speeches, and radio addresses that he wrote over the years.
Most are from the 1970s and it's fascinating to see how relevant they still are today. Reagan had a unique talent for taking issues and summarizing them in a few paragraphs; then offering common-sense conservative solutions.

Interesting. Has there been any sort of research done on Reagan's would-be assassin John Hinkley's political beliefs and affiliations?

Bombshell revelations about Ronald Reagan...Tom Clancy made one of his own on C-Span today, plugging his new book co-written with Gen. Zinni. He claims that in about twenty years when certain material is declassified, it will become apparent that Reagan not only played on the weaknesses of the USSR to bring it down, but set out deliberately to destroy it. He believes that Reagan worked with Sec. Weinberger and CIA Director Casey, who "hated the Russians", to keep the USSR off-balance and destabilized. Most interesting was the supposition that Casey, a strong Catholic, made a number of trips to meet with the Pope who added his own bit of pressure from his position to help keep the Russian client-states in turmoil...sounds like something from one of his novels, but he says it was for real......

The Left often dismisses Ronald Reagan as an "amiable dunce," .. Demonizing Dubya from the same tired 30 year old playbook shows he's got the left in a "Gipperized" meltdown mode!

I will get this book.
Ronald Reagan was a great man. The best president in my life time, the best president of the 20th centruy, and one of the top three or four presidents in the history of our nation.

Very very interesting. If I had money to spend on things other than food, rent and gas I'd buy it. Being in college can really suck at times, ya know.......
