The Hinckleys were friends of the Bush family. And John was always a little "touched" in the head.

From what I remember Hinkley tried to kill Reagan in attempt to impress the actress Jody Foster. Ms. Foster appears to be liberal from the little I've heard about her over the years. My guess is that Foster must have made some ill comments about President Reagan. He was just trying to garner her attention by attempting the assassination.
