Mr. President, Thank you! You gave everything you had to preserve what you and I both saw as important. I voted for you, and the first time you lost, the time was not right, the country was not ready, but the second time was yours, and during your Presidency, one of the greatest political miracles of the century took place.
The long separation of East and West Germany by a wall of repression, which many thought would never come down, fell overnight because of what you started by asking for the impossible. That event alone which signaled the end of the Cold War, in my eyes and the eyes of millions of people will remain a lasting legacy of your Presidency.
There is more, much, much more, all of it inspiring, positive, uplifting, and full of that original vision of the "shining City on the Hill" We honor you for what you did, who you are, and what you inspired in us as a Nation, and a people.
Thank you Mr. President.

I was a teenager during the Carter administration. Like most teenagers, I wasn't interested in politics but I could sense that something wasn't right in the country. I was just entering the workforce and jobs were difficult to find at that time, even part-time jobs for teenagers. I remember talking to a grocery store clerk about the job market, and her words were, "If you've got a job, keep it 'cause there isn't anything else out there."
The Iranian hostage situation just served to push the American morale to an even deeper low. I can still remember my dad watching the news night after night with the caption "Day xxx" referring to the number of days the hostages were held captive. It was like a constant, pounding headache.
I remember the day Reagan was elected and the hostages were released. There was a collective 'hoorah!' as the country regained its manhood and rumors spread that Reagan wasn't afraid to turn Iran into a "glass parking lot". A real man was at the helm and you'd better not "mess with the US".
I began to notice an attitude change in the people around me. People were optimistic. I noticed that business started picking up, especially small businesses. Good or bad, strip malls started popping up everywhere. Everyone I knew that owned a home was doing something called "re-financing". People in suits were talking about the money they were making in "the market". The term "trickle-down" joined the lexicon, and despite its detractors, it seemed to trickle just fine.
It was during Reagan's tenure that I came of age as a citizen. Reagan taught me my first political lesson--the President of the United States has a huge impact on the moral tone and attitude of the nation. It wasn't until he was out of office that I learned just what it was that he did for the nation, but as a dumb teenager he inspired me with his strength of character and conviction. Even back then I knew that he was a great man and was doing great things for the country.
Thank you, Mr. Reagan, for your service to your country. Thank you for touching my life in ways you don't know. May God bless you and rest your soul.
