I don't know if I could do it on TV either. I've had to keep it together while reading something on the radio and that ws tough enough.

"Rat cellar" - that's a good one! :o)

I actually saw 3 decent posts, when I sneaked a peek over at DU. So, at least 3 people are thinking with some sensitivity, rather than hating. Good for them.

Otherwise, it seemed like one of Dante's levels of hell. Such rabid hatred!

I remember Reagan's fantastic humor even in the midst of great difficulty. For example, in the hospital after he was shot, he said, Honey, I forgot to duck!

Also, just before the surgeons began their operation to take the bullet out and save his life, he said, Oh, I sure hope you doctors are all Republicans! One of the doctors responded with, Mr. President, today we are ALL Republicans.

Well I feel like many in America today feel that on this day we are all Republicans.

I'm glad that there was respect at that time at that place.

"Didn't he start his program tonight with a nice tribute to President Reagan?"

Didn't see that one, but I did see Jane Skinner's bio piece that led into Brit Hume's anchor spot. It was disgusting, as it ended with Ollie North as the evil downfall of Reagan's presidency. I was so glad to see that Brit had Ollie was brought on as a guest commentator.

Nicknamed "the Great Communicator," Ronald Reagan was both one of the best political orators of the 20th Century and a self-deprecating wit. Following is a collection of some classic Reaganisms.

• "I did turn 75 today -- but remember, that's only 24 Celsius."

• "It's true hard work never killed anybody, but I figure, why take the chance?"

• "A friend of mine was asked to a costume ball a short time ago. He slapped some egg on his face and went as a liberal economist."

• To wife Nancy after John Hinckley, Jr.'s 1981 assassination attempt: "Honey, I forgot to duck."

• During a 1984 debate with Walter Mondale: "I'm not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience."

• "You can tell a lot about a fellow's character by his way of eating jellybeans."

• "Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first."

• In testing the microphone for his weekly radio address, Reagan declared, ''My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today I've just signed legislation which outlaws Russia forever. The bombing begins in five minutes.''

• "Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall."

• "Mr. President," TV reporter Sam Donaldson yelled out at Reagan after a 1982 press conference, "In talking about the continuing recession tonight, you have blamed the mistakes of the past and you've blamed Congress. Does any of the blame belong to you?" Reagan responded, "Yes, because for many years I was a Democrat."

• "Now, so there will be no misunderstanding, it's not my intention to do away with government. It is rather to make it work -- work with us, not over us; to stand by our side, not ride on our back. Government can and must provide opportunity, not smother it; foster productivity, not stifle it."

• "Well, this administration's objective will be a healthy, vigorous, growing economy that provides equal opportunity for all Americans, with no barriers born of bigotry or discrimination."

• "Above all we must realize that no arsenal or no weapon in the arsenals of the world is so formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women."

• "I hope you're all Republicans," he told doctors who were about to operate on his bullet wounds.

• "Did we forget that government is the people's business, and every man, woman and child becomes a shareholder with the first penny of taxes paid?"

• "We do not have a trillion dollar debt because we haven't taxed enough. We have a trillion dollar debt because we spend too much."

• "But with these considerations firmly in mind, I call upon the scientific community in our country, those who gave us nuclear weapons, to turn their great talents now to the cause of mankind and world peace, to give us the means of rendering these nuclear weapons impotent and obsolete."

• "Abortion is advocated only by persons who themselves have been born."

• "Politics is a very rewarding profession. If you succeed there are many rewards, if you disgrace yourself you can always write a book."

• "America is too great for small dreams."

• "We will always remember. We will always be proud. We will always be prepared, so we can always be free."

• "Government growing beyond our consent had become a lumbering giant, slamming shut the gates of opportunity, threatening to crush the very roots of our freedom."

RIP Governor, Mr. President. California was blessed to have you for our governor for so many years as well as our President. None like you will ever pass this way again.

I'm in sorrow, but I am relieved for both him and for Nancy.

God bless Ronald Reagan and his family. God blessed America and the rest of the world with him.

I agree. We ought not to be too sad about the death of President Reagan. He lived a full life for 93 years --- longer than any other president in U.S. history. He seems to have died peacefully, after a decade-long battle with a debilitating disease.

President Reagan's optimism about this country's future was infectious in a time of pessimism and malaise. His policies caused the liberation of hundreds of millions of people from the tyranny of communism. He began the process of liberating millions of Americans from the tyranny of the welfare state.

I wish I could be even 1/10th of the person President Reagan was.

May God comfort the Reagan family.

Ok I give up...this is about the 3rd or 4th time that Shep has asked someone about whether President Reagan was showing signs of Alzheimers in the last couple years of his administration!

I guess Shep is going to keep asking til he gets the answer he's looking for!

Why don't you save your sarcasm and insults for another thread? Both are really in poor taste seeing as this is a memorial thread.

I was born in 1980, and Reagan is my hero. I only know him from reading the text of his speeches, and several books written about him...and I know that he was the greatest president of the 20th century. I wish we had more Republicans like him. EVERYONE needs to read this, and send it to your friends and family. We must never forget what a great man he was.
