NEW YORK - Former New York Times Executive Editor Howell Raines has has written a column for the The Guardian in London excoriating John Kerry [related, bio] as ``pompous'' and ``ponderous,'' and saying he looks like the character Lurch from the ``Addams Family'' TV show.
``The TV camera is an X-ray for picking up attitudinal truths, and Kerry's lantern jaw and Addams Family face somehow reinforce the message that this guy has passed from ponderous to pompous and is so accustomed to privilege that he doesn't have to worry about looking goofy,'' Raines wrote. ``It's as if Lurch had gone to Choate.
Raines also said Kerry ``has to get better as a candidate'' if he is to win:
``Where Bill Clinton's most famous campaign message was, `It's the economy stupid,' Kerry's seems to be. `It's the war, sort of, and it's the economy, maybe.'''
Comparing Kerry to Al Gore, Raines wrote Kerry is ``pompous in a way that Gore is not. With Gore, you feel that if he could choose, he would have been born poor and cool. Kerry radiates the feeling that he is entitled to his sense of entitlement. Probably that comes from spending too much time with Teddy Kennedy.''
lurch eh? He must be reading FR posts about lurch being lurch.
sounds like Raines is finally telling the truth
With bells on! And probably at the NYT!! Just when they thought it was safe to come out!!
I think he looks more like Herman from the monsters.( Without the charisma or charm of course.)
Actually, if you read the whole article, it is more of an incredibly condescending swipe at the American people than it is a real criticism of Kerry on anything other than style points. He basically suggests that Kerry tell the morons what they want to hear so that he can get elected.
I think we know for a fact Raines article will never see the light of day in the NYT.
bump
The only reason Raines is speaking the truth here is that he is intensely resentful at Kerry's incompetence standing in the way of Raines' rat party from regaining full power soon. He is a ferocious rat partisan, just like all New York Times scum.
It's actually from the Globe's rival, The Boston Herald.
You get the prize. Let's watch this train wreck and see Hillary step in to save the party.
No, actually Gore's pomposity is quite similar.
I liked him better as Capt. Louis "round up the usual suspects" Renault.
Hillary then will have her prize and the American people can start getting ready for our version of the third Reich
He must listen to Rush. He owns this tagline.
I love it when the Boston paper does a hack job on Kerry. You know he's mad about this. :-)
The best part is they are quoting Raines, the editor and chief sycophant from the "Paper of Record".
The Herald must really dislike Kerry to be doing that.
