~ SPORTS DAY IN THE CANTEEN ~

The Canteen Doors Are Open!

Yep! Another fun filled Sports Day for all of our Troops, Veterans, and their families. (Oh yeah! For Canteeners and lurkers as well.)

Anyhoo, the Canteen Sports CEO (That would be Mr.Tonkin for those that would like to file a complaint!) would like for us to keep things simple for Sports this week. So? Being that we have no power over such things, we are going to take him at his word. After all, he's the CEO and he always knows everything. Right?  The right hand side provides all the sports information you will need! So? Have at it kids! Have fun!!

(In all honesty, we don't want to bog down the thread opening anymore. We'll keep it short and simple. Anything else we'd like to add will be posted on the thread itself!)

CANTEEN SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS
1. The Cincinnati Reds, not the Chicago Cubs, are currently in First Place in the National League - Central Division. Please make note of that. Be sure to pester Cubbie lover, tomkow6, about it. He'll appreciate it.

2. No! This isn't Da Bears season yet. So? The CSC CEO won't care what we write about in the Canteen. (Don't tell him Da Bears will be bad again this year. Hehe!)

3. The French Open is currently going on. Anyone care? We didn't think so. Besides, all the American men are gone. Wimbledon is next for us. WooHoo!

4. Anyone see the Indy 500?? Isn't it nice that we all know how to say Buddy Rice? It sure is. Nice to see an American win it again.

5. *YAWN* The Yankees are in first place again. Different year, same story. Poor BoSox fans.

6. If you want to end your football career with controversy, sign up to be the head coach at Colorado. McCartney, Neuheisel, and Barnett. What a grand school. (Although, Barnett wasn't fired.)

7. Just an observation: The British papers and people love two things more than anything else. They love soccer and sex. Kind of convenient since they both start with "s". They are obsessed with David Beckham and who he's with or isn't. Looks like his wife Victoria is becoming the Hillary Clinton of Great Britian. Sucks to be either one of them.

8. We know what you're thinking: WHY ISN'T IT FRIDAY ALREADY? We hear ya there!

John Kerry, Commie Hero, is a Hawk?

Sen. John Kerry is scheduled to deliver a speech on reforming America’s military. Previews of the speech indicate that Kerry is not going to look anything like the Kerry, who is immortalized as one of the great reasons that the North Vietnamese were able to defeat America in that country’s war museum [news article link]. Kerry will try to portray himself as even more hawkish than President Bush.

The interesting thing is that Kerry sounds like President Bush when discussing his strategy for the war on terrorism and a military of the future.

Richard Hollbrooke, who has advised Democrat Presidents for decades and currently advises Kerry, tried to bolster Kerry’s foreign policy credentials on the Charlie Rose Show. Hollbrooke argued for the delay aspect that no action should take place without multilateral support (the very action that took place in Bosnia which resulted in hundreds of thousands of ethnic cleansing deaths before the incompetent "Old" Europeans finally showed up to join in the absurd Gen. Wesley Clarke executed War in Bosnia). Hollbrooke even tried to suggest that not since George W’s father, George H. W. Bush, has a candidate been as qualified in foreign affairs as Sen. John Kerry.

All of this is the object of the week, to make Kerry look like he is a hawk.

It has been hinted that Kerry’s speech today will try to out-Rumsfeld Don Rumsfeld in its call for lighter, faster and more powerful strategy.

Part of his speech will carry these remarks:

"We went into Iraq with too few troops to prevent looting and crime, and we failed to secure nearly a million tons of conventional weapons now being used against our troops. We failed to build alliances and squandered the opportunity to generate wider support inside Iraq, in the Arab world, and among the major powers. These mistakes have complicated our mission and complicated our objective: a stable Iraq with a representative government secure in its borders."

"The effect is clear: our soldiers are stretched too thin."

"The Administration's answer has been to put band-aids on the problem. They have effectively used a stop loss policy as a back-door draft. They have extended tours of duty, delayed retirements, and prevented enlisted personnel from leaving the service. Just yesterday, the Army announced this would effect even more soldiers whose units are headed to Iraq and Afghanistan. By employing these expedients, they've increased the forces by 30,000 troops."

Kerry’s retired generals who are part of shaping today’s speech on the military are:

·        Admiral William Crowe, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

·        Gen. John Shalikashvili, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

·        Gen. Wesley Clark, former Supreme Allied Commander, Europe

·        Gen. Joseph Hoar, former Commander-in-Chief, US Central Command

·        Admiral Stansfield Turner, former director, Central Intelligence Agency

·        Gen. Tony McPeak, former US Air Force Chief of Staff

·        Gen. Johnnie Wilson, former Commander, US Army Material Command

·        LTG Daniel Christman, former superintendent, U.S. Military Academy

·        LTG General Kennedy, former Deputy Army Chief of Staff for Intelligence

·        Vice Admiral Lee Gunn, former Inspector General, U.S. Navy

·        Maj. Gen. Harry Jenkins, former Chief Legislative Liaison, U.S. Marine Corps.

Advising Kerry on foreign policy are former Clinton Cabinet members:

·        Defense Secretary William Perry

·        National Security Adviser; Samuel R. Berger

·        Richard Hollbrooke

·        Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright. Mrs. Albright.

Kerry has also benefited from Gen. Barry McCaffrey, an NBC News on-air analyst; and retired Marine Corps Gen. Anthony Zinni’s criticism of President Bush’s policies.

Despite all of this, the best political position that Kerry can come up with is that he would be a more competent executor of Bush policy than Bush.

This can only be successful, however, if Kerry can implement the belief that the very policies he is advocating are not currently working. It seems that the best Kerry can muster doesn’t go beyond the latest Kerry campaign slogan... "America be America Again."

Greetings, Canteeners, Troops,
and All the Ships at Sea!

Sarge is checking in from the wilds of Cheeseland, on Day Five of the training cycle, and it's a GORGEOUS day under prairie skies, breezy and warm, and stuck in the classroom. Except of course, for chow: Sarge did al fresco chow with some buds out at the open-air PX they've got here.

Back-to-back tests are the rule of the day, here. Web access is at a premium on days like this, but at least I can get here is I have to. Ya gotta love this 21st Century Army we've got here!

Sarge is going to indulge himself tomorrow night, and be there for the premiere of "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban"! Opening night for a popular movie series is always fun and frolic, and this one promises to be no different!

Well, just a few Personals:

TONKIN: Cool sports thread for today, like every day, Skipper!

BENTFEATHER/BEACH/HOPE/SAILOR: Congratulations to all the winners of the categories of the Poetry Contest!!! Those were wonderful entries! And to our resident Poetess, such a great thing it is, to have those inspirations for us all!

STAR/KJFINE: You two won't recognize this place, from photos and memory. Major projects are being completed around the place, and it's shaping up to be a lot less of an outpost, and becoming a REAL post.

Sarge will be in the area rest of the day, so Let's Have Fun!

SARGE

You should have seen the changes after one year!!! When we left, the new food center, gas station thingy was not even there. The ground was not even broken. Of course, with that being the main Mob site for reserve and guard troops, you would think that they would sink some money into it!

Hey Sarge.......you really look busy up there.

Harry Potter is on our schedule too! Hubby and I just watch HP II last night to get us back into the "mood". After watching the LOTRs trio and the quest, one must get themselves help to get back into the world of HP and the world of magic.

Hope you find time to visit Camp-Run-A-Muck tomorrow. See ya then! Have a good evening.
