Radio station suspends pro-English ad

The Associated Press 6/1/2004, 7:35 p.m. ET

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — A radio station temporarily suspended broadcasts of a commercial for a Republican congressional candidate who rails against illegal immigration but then signs off in Spanish, including the salutation "Yo, Gringo!"

WSJS-AM said it made the decision over the holiday weekend because it was unclear if the sponsor was clearly identified in the otherwise-English ad for candidate Vernon Robinson. The ad contends the prevalence of Spanish spoken in the United States can make English-speaking Americans feel like they're in "The Twilight Zone."

Only the final line is in Spanish. After "Yo, Gringo!" — a contemptuous Spanish term for Americans — the rest translates to "This episode of 'The Twilight Zone' was paid for by Robinson for Congress."

The commercial was returned to the air Tuesday with the English translation. WSJS manager Tom Hamilton said all political ads were temporarily suspended while the problem with Robinson's ad was resolved.

Robinson said the flap did not change the overall message of his commercial: "To show the importance of securing our borders, stopping the illegal immigration invasion and making English the official language of the United States."

He said Tuesday he grudgingly agreed to let the station edit it into English, but is considering a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission.

He said neither the FCC nor the Federal Election Commission offer guidance on whether the announcement of sponsorship must be in English.

Rod Royse, an FCC spokesman in Washington, said rules about political ad disclaimers are written in general language, based on the good-faith judgment of candidates and broadcasters. In some situations, he said, Spanish would be appropriate for a disclaimer "but in this case, it's not. ... There's a possibility of a violation."

Robinson, a black Winston-Salem city councilman and regular candidate for office, is one of eight GOP candidates in the July 20 primary for the 5th Congressional District seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Richard Burr, who is running for the Senate.

In campaign mailings, Robinson has often invoked the name of one of the state's conservative icons, proclaiming: "Jesse Helms is back! And this time he's black." In January, he placed a one-ton Ten Commandments monument outside Winston-Salem City Hall; the city removed it.

Why? A black Republican railing against the invasion is a welcome sight. I couldn't care less if he is perceived as being derogatory.

Gotta love that line. I like this guy's sense of humor. He's needs to do an 'I'm Gonna Get You Sucka' spoof, complete with goldfish in the heels of his disco platform shoes.

Vernon Robinson is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Middle Eastern affairs. A former college professor, he now runs a foundation promoting school choice in North Carolina. He was part of the group that helped pave the way for legislation to permit charter schools in the state.

His platform is simple: return to good old Christian principles.

He is pro-life, pro-Second Amendment, pro-traditional values, and pro-tax reform and reduction. He is against special rights for homosexuals, against illegal immigration, against racial quotas and against big government and wasteful spending.

"We must defend the tradition of marriage. ... We must stop federal judges from making legislation at the bench ... and we must make English the official language of the United States of America and secure our borders," Robinson said.

(and he's making eight Town Hall Meetings over three days with Tom Tancredo. Go, man, go!- NRT)

So do I. I like this part -- "...the rest translates to "This episode of 'The Twilight Zone' was paid for by Robinson for Congress."

also don't take that last comment as I don't like VR... Whoever wins that primary will do a good job in DC. They have big shoes to fill.

Another possible write-in candidate for President this November. Too bad he's only running for Congress.

Man, you're bringing back memories. I haven't been to South of the Border in many years. I remember first stopping there on north-south road trips, coming and going, way back in the 50s.

I would guess it's grown quite a bit since the last time I stopped there, in 1969.

I don't know. But I remember when I was a little kid my dad told me not to use that word because it is anti-American.

Maybe he's using "yo" in a different way from what you think. I guess that "yo" is Spanish first person singular? But "yo" also is a (mainly Philadelphia) slang term for (I guess) "hey" (?) For example, "Yo Adrian, it's me Rocky." LOL
