China tells Britney to 'cover up'

Posted on 06/01/2004 6:53:12 AM PDT by yoely

Britney Spears' first concerts in China have been approved by its culture ministers, on condition that she does not reveal too much skin onstage. Spears is due to perform five concerts in Shanghai and Beijing later this year as part of her current world tour.

But her sexual image has concerned the communist state, and her stage outfits face "strict reviews", China News Service (CNS) reported.

The singer's spokesman was unavailable for comment.

Standards

Culture officials have asked the Chinese organisers of the concerts to guarantee Spears does not show "too much" skin, CNS said.

It was not clear what standards inspectors would use or how they would be enforced.

The head of the Chinese culture ministry's performance division, Pan Yan, said she had not received a performance application and could not comment on the report.

Having sold more than 54 million records sold worldwide, Spears would be one of the biggest international pop stars to perform in China.

Last year the Rolling Stones abandoned attempts to perform in China, saying it had been too complicated and difficult to arrange concerts there.

The group had been due to play in Beijing and Shanghai last April, but the gigs were postponed because of the Sars crisis

Too bad her parents never gave her the same instructions.

If someone in a southern state suggested this, every newspaper in the U.S. would be mocking them.

She's just glad they didn't tell her she had to actually sing during the "concert".

Without the 2 hour strip show she has no act since she can't sing. Britney should stay home.

I like when she sings solo...so low I can't hear her.

I even like it when she sings tenor.....10 or twelve miles away!

Perfect world scenario: Britney gets arrested and jailed in China for explicit behavior on stage. Her gazillion young fans in America go nuts. Dubya sends in the troops to "rescue" Britney. While they're there they decide to go ahead and dismantle China's nuclear program. And the "left" cries and complains that Britney was really working for the CIA and Haliburton all along.....

Nah... she'll just sing and then they'll ask her not to come back.

A good point is that Britney can look good in anything, so her dress can be classy or slutty, depending on the message she wishes to send to others. I wish she would be classy. Too many kids pay attention to her.

Covering up is the best advice this young woman could get. She gets less attractive every time I see her - not her herself, but the way she presents herself. A bit of modesty is the greatest attraction.

I agree. The more slutty she appears, the less attractive she becomes. Whores are not attractive. Why so many women in the entertainment industry seek to emulate them escapes me... until I talk to other guys with no sense of taste or a bit of class themselves.

In the interest of full disclosure, here's the subject of our discussion, without the benefit of makeup artists and hairdressers: And no, I'm not trying to pick on ms. Spears. These were most certainly NOT the worst ones I could find. Just being realistic.
