Sen. John Kerry's record as an anti-war protester came back to haunt him on Memorial Day when he was confronted by a heckler as he tried to pay his respects to a soldier killed in the Vietnam War.
"How much money are you getting to betray our POWs?" an unidentified middle-aged woman shouted as Kerry visited the Vietnam Veterans memorial on the Washington Mall.
"Are you paying tribute to all the people you spat on, Senator Kerry?" she added.
The incident came as Kerry attempted to honor William Bronson, a Massachusetts native who was killed in Vietnam.
Kerry led the fight to have Bronson's name added to those already inscribed on the black granite wall, according to Reuters. "I'm glad we could finally get the appropriate thing done," the top Democrat told his mother, Barbara, who was there for the ceremony.
The heckling episode served to underscore the resentment many veterans still feel towards Kerry from his days as a leader with the Vietnam Veterans Against the War, when he teamed up with anti-American actress Jane Fonda.
Ironically, though Kerry has made his service in Vietnam a centerpiece of his campaign and has continued to attack President Bush's service in the Texas Air National Guard, veterans are shunning him, according to a poll released last week.
Though the CBS survey showed Kerry opening up an eight point lead over Bush overall, the poll's internal numbers show Kerry trailing badly among veterans, with only 41 percent supporting him while 54 percent back Bush.

Kerry: "I didn't spit on them, and then I did spit on them!"
I've been googling and I can't find any articles about Kerry trying to get this man's name on the wall ... just that it's the Pentegon who decides who's names are on the wall
It also seems that Sen Kerry was not one of the scheduled speakers for today

The Department of Defense makes all decisions about persons whose names are eligible for inscription on The Wall, based on established criteria. Each year, the Memorial Fund hires stone experts from Colorado-based Great Panes Glassworks, Inc. to add names to the black granite panels and to change the status designations of existing names from missing-in-action to killed-in-action. This year, the status symbols of 17 servicemen were changed. The diamond symbol denotes confirmation of death; the cross symbol represents missing in action; and when a service members remains are returned or accounted for, the diamond symbol is superimposed over the cross.
Memorial Day Observance To Be Webcast Live on the Internet
The Memorial Fund has teamed up with TVWorldwide.com to broadcast the ceremony live via its USVets.tv Internet TV Channel. Base Technologies is sponsoring the broadcast, to date. This is the third year TVWorldwide.com has partnered with the Memorial Fund to make its ceremonies available to veterans and the general public nationwide. Satellite coordinates for the broadcast will be announced in a future media advisory.
Established in 1979, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is the non-profit organization authorized by Congress to build the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Today, through a series of outreach programs, the organization works to preserve the legacy of The Wall, to promote healing and to educate about the impact of the Vietnam War.
The idea of heckling at a memorial service is flat out distasteful to me. It just seems wrong. I'm not sure if I'll be able to ever agree with doing so.
Scoundrel though Kerry may be, it just seems more like an insult to the memory of William Bronson than anything else.
Having said that, I am unable to think of anyone more deserving of being chased away from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial than a treacherous purple heart popinjay who invested his early discharge in slander, defamation and perjury against the very soldiers and sailors he claimed as his comrades.
How Kerry can find it in himself to stand in the presence of the names of so many of those whose memories he wrongfully stained is something I will never want to be able to understand.
As uncouth as I find heckling at a memorial service to be, the spectacle of a traitor like Kerry standing at a memorial to those he betrayed is infinitely more intolerable.
I've been waiting for FOX to say something about the Heckler this past few hours as reported here, to no avail! Perhaps, out of respect for veterans, they've cool it for now and report about it tomorrow. I can wish can't I?
is that a joke? Purple Heart 3? Did Kerry really do that?
