GAY LABEL NO LONGER LIBEL: JUDGE

May 31, 2004 -- BOSTON - Stating that someone is homosexual does not amount to libel or slander, particularly in light of new court decisions granting gays more rights, a federal judge has ruled.

The ruling by Judge Nancy Gertner came as she threw out a lawsuit by a former boyfriend of pop singer Madonna who claimed he was libeled because his name appeared in a photo caption in a book about Madonna - under a shot of Madonna walking with a gay man...

of course I think this is sick. Try insisting that a gay person is actually a heterosexual and they'll probably lock you up for "hurting his feelings". You have to be kidding me. So calling a heterosexual a homosexual is no longer slander in the eyes of the law... even though it is slander... - billy

I thought making false statement about someone that could hurt -- and beign labled a homosexual would, among others, surely keep the babes away -- was libel.

Whether "gay" is an epithet or a compliment depends on who says it to whom. Ask GLSEN. Just like the "N-word." Ask any rapper or homie.

At a previous workplace the "word" was out that I was probably homosexual, since I hadn't been hitting on the ladies there.

Of course, the corporation had a strict harassment policy and people in my department were specifically prohibted from having any relatives at the site. PLUS my dept manager lectured us on NOT responding to ANY display of female skin, no matter how revealing!

SOME days you just can't win.
