The Star Spangled Banner
What does it mean...

The Star Spangled Banner, What does it do for you? It's been through a lot.
Composed September 14th, 1814 By Francis Scott Key after going through
extraordinary circumstances gave this nation a great gift. But it wasn't recognized as
the national anthem until 1916 when it was so by President Woodrow Wilson
by executive order, and then it was mostly played at military events.

Thank you for your post about "The Star-Spangled Banner." It's a shame that the photo with the article does not show that great flag.

It is a little-known fact that any flag which has at one time been an official flag of the US can be flown today as the official US flag. And anyone who wants to fly the Banner can obtain a replica at a reasonable price in either cotton or nylon from the Flag House Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, the folks who maintain the house where the original Banner was sown as a highly-visible symbol that Fort McHenry still stood and had not been reduced.

I am posting this from IssaquahKing because he's still up on his mountain, but it is beautifully written and a memory he will always have - the stand at Klamath and the FReeper Sawgrass Caravan across this great country...

IssaquahKing: "When I think of all the places in this great nation,
and other places that I've heard those familiar notes,
the one I shall never forget was at Klamath Falls, Oregon.
It was July 20th, 2001, the day that Klamath Falls Calvary,
Head Gate Detachment rode. They rode in over the
ridge 143 strong, in two lines about 150 yards apart converging,
so that two riders crested the ridge every few seconds,
and crossed about two thirds of the way down the hill.
Each horseman had an American flag and the Star Spangled
Banner playing crystal clear. Even the federal agents, stopped and
observed colors, I don't believe there was a dry eye at the site.
Thus was my official introduction to the beginning
of a very long protest in K - Falls.
We were not protesting against our country, but for America, and a way of life,
because we love this nation, and go to great lengths to protect it from harm."

Thanks for the thread! I love the Star Spangled Banner and never want any singer playing with the original..I love it best played by a big miltary band, sung by a military group ...It gives me goose bumps...It makes me feel fortunate to be born in this great country...May God continue to bless America.

AMERICA..HOME OF THE FREE BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE

Back in August 1982 I had just earned the title of Marine the Marine band played the SSB and I snapped a sharp salute and realized that I would be fighting for that flag against the enemies of our country. I also thought that I was part of a family that have fought and died for the flag not only my immediate family but a larger one that dated back to the Revolutionary war. Now I don't like to see the national ensign desecrated or burned but people have the right to do it that is what is great about this country, we allow open dissent. I wish the liberals in this country would have more respect for our flag and the men and women that have to fight for it and are in a casket under it. They hate America, they hate the flag and they hate anything conservative and it is pitiful because these traitors pose as senators and congressmen and a former Vice President in Washington DC

A beautiful song that Roseanne Barr should never, ever be allowed to sing publicly again.

My no longer extant link was to a long (22k) article in the Winter 2002 edition of US History Quarterly by Robert J. Allison entitled US-Mideast Wars: A Bitter History The American encounter with Islam began long before the "Middle East" existed as a geographical region, and before the United States existed as a nation. I have a copy of the original text, but not the associated graphics. I can post the text, properly formatted, if folks here want it. It wouldn't add to Key's earlier verses, posted above, just to the history surrounding them.

A remarkable song -- one that starts and ends with a question.

Providing the answer is our job...
