President Bush will be the first to meet privately with leaders of Rolling Thunder Inc. when the group's 200,000 motorcycle riders rumble into downtown tomorrow for their 17th annual Memorial Day weekend rally.
"This is the first time we have a personal invitation from the president to sit down and talk about our issues," said Artie M. Muller, president and co-founder of Rolling Thunder, a nonprofit dedicated to publicizing the plight of American prisoners of war left behind in all the nation's conflicts.
"In all the years we have been doing this," Mr. Muller said, "this is the first administration that has been working with us."
They will meet at the White House, where Mr. Bush will deliver a message either by phone or by tape to the larger gathering on the Mall, White House spokesman Trent Duffy said.
"He's proud of what they represent, and they've become an important part of our Memorial Day remembrances," Mr. Duffy said.

We were discreet back then and polite!
In fact, the phrase "sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me" saved us all from mass destruction since we ALL had a name. Big deal..that's what kids do. Now you get expelled by the gestapo teachers.
This IS NOTED on C-SPAN's schedule for tomorrow (during the 1:00-6:00 p.m. hours).
Riding through DC with 200,000 motorcycles, drowning out the weekend dedication of the overdue WWII Memorial is not my idea of winning the hearts and minds of the American people.
The deidication of the WWII memorial is on Saturday and Rolling Thunder will ride on Sunday. I don't see RT competing with or "drowning out" the WWII dedication, but rather, complementing it. RT has been using the Memorial Day weekend since 1987.
That's what I heard Brian Lamb say on Friday's Washington Journal. Brian cited the many events surrounding the dedication of the WWII memorial.
You are correct. Kerry is sitting on a Honda Gold Wing. Reuters has identified it in error.
Thanks...I didn't know.
One thing you will not see. Bush getting on a bike. He will admire the machinery and say that Harley makes the best bikes in the world and that will be it.
Unlike Kerry who pretends to ride a harley and probably has a Puegot in his garage. I know it isn't a motorcycle. It is 2 motorcycles with a wooden plank across the middle.
OLD
Strange as it would be for me, I've been thinking about riding a motorcycle at some point -- if I live overseas (which is a possibility) it'd be a much easier mode of transport than trying to drive those tiny cars in crowded city streets.
Yes, I just said "mode of transport" and "motorcycle" -- this is why I haven't gotten one yet.
And he would proudly acknowledge that they are made in America.
A few years ago I did a single Freep when Clinton visited the Harley plant in York, PA. He was given a Harley hat to wear from the Mayor. He would not wear it because it said made in America. Didn't want to PO the chinese or japanese ya know.
Harelys are great bikes, in their niche. To say they are the best discounts a lot of realms of motorcyling, and almost all competition. Ducatis have ruled road-racing (along with Honda) since four strokes took over. Dirt bik racing is ruled by the Japanese and Ausrian KTM. Beemers are awesome high speed tourging machines, etc.
The memorial dedication today was great. Don't you think the WWII vets would respect the Vietnam vets? They are after all their fathers.
Especially after what they endured upon returning to the US only to be spit on due to the efforts of the liberal Kerry crowd.
The anti-war types were the very ones doing that spitting.
They're all French or Swiss, I'm sure they love him.
Just like those UN ambulances full of Palestinian gunmen?
You're kidding! I love watching this event every year, you mean to tell me we won't get to watch it this year?
Yup. Too poliitcal in this Presidential election year.
""When you ride a whole bunch of Harleys together with straight pipes, it sounds like a B-52 carpet bombing,"
They can't ignore it.
If nothing else, thousands of car alarms going off as we pass by makes sure of that.....:))
"Barbarian biker horde" bump....;)
Wha' happened?
He forget to ask mommy for another quarter?
I'm gonna do my best vid-cam the ride itself.
You miss the "effect" without the audio...;)
Harleys use a lot of foreign parts.
Hubby yanks them all off and replaces them with aftermarket parts made in the USA.
Our bolt-on trike conversion kits are -entirely- made with "Made in the USA" parts.
[not just "made in America" which includes all of North America]
We're "purists"....LOL!
