U.S. Muslim Group Calls for Plan Within Community to Fight Terrorism

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A national Muslim group called Friday for a campaign within the Muslim community and mosques to root out terrorist supporters after federal officials said they were looking for a California man with links to al-Qaida. The Muslim Public Affairs Council's plan urged Muslims to "be on the lookout" for Adam Yahiye Gadahn, 25, although the FBI said he is not believed to be living in the country.
Gadahn is suspected of attending an al-Qaida training camp and working as a translator for the group. The FBI says, however, that he is not suspected of any specific terrorist activity.
Fliers containing the FBI's photographs of seven wanted people will be handed out to mosques nationwide, officials said.
The plan was put forward because of the Justice Department's warning that credible intelligence reports point to a possible terror attack this summer, said Maher Mathout, senior adviser to the Muslim Public Affairs Council.
The council also sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft requesting a meeting with Muslim leaders.
Terrorism has tarnished the Muslim-American community, Mathout said, and there have been accusations on some conservative talk shows that the community has failed to condemn violence.
"We are in complete partnership with good people to protect America," Mathout said as he explained the plan to hundreds of Friday worshippers at a Los Angeles mosque.
"We have so much at stake ... protecting our faith and our country," he said. "God forbid something terrible happens in America, the number one losers will be the Muslims."
The campaign says the Muslim community should give law enforcement information on terrorist suspects and emphasize that "terrorism is not a valid means of struggle in Islam." It also asks that mosque leaders make sure to authorize all lectures or talks there.
In addition, law enforcement agencies should train Muslims to identify potential terrorists and mosques should increase their communication so they can combat terrorism together.
Los Angeles worshippers agreed with the idea.
"We have to follow the laws of the land, the laws of the world," said Ahmed Saahir, 39. "I see it as Muslims doing what's right. Allah, God, said (to) do what's right."
Better late than never.................
PONG
These people are sure slow breathers!!! Finally, some of them might actually have a clue!
This "community" has a LOT of catching up to do, as far as I'm concerned.
A LOT.
I guess the idea of internment camps isn't sittin' to well with them...
This is a good beginning..now CAIR should also encourage the same sort of cooperation.
Who are the Arab-Americans (I can't believe I succumbed to the hyphenated American thing.)who are registered to vote going to support for Prez? Does anyone know? Seen any polls? I'd bet they'll vote AGAINST Bush; blood is thicker than water. The ony hope we have is that they won't want to leave the convenience store long enough to go vote.
Do we even have a clue as to what goes on in these Mosques?
It doesn't matter what CAIR says. Since they are radicals themselves, their words of support against terrorism are meaningless.
True...
This is from Onion, right?
Sure...law enforcement know. That's why it's perplexing why they don't shut the worst of them down.
FEAR is the nightmare of Islam.
If we want to fight that evil cult of Islam (as Bush is rightly doing), SCARE IT.
Islam = submission = COWARDICE
SUBMIT Islam to the American POWER!
Muslim are COWARDS!
You can see it yourself in the article you published.
"You can see it yourself in the article you published"
No I can't.
And submission to God is NOT cowardice
I what them all to sing "God Bless America" together live on TV!
The men all go off to a room with very thick layers of rugs so that they don't bruise their knees.
I only trust a Muslim or a Democrat as far as I can throw them.

Camps? No, the idea of every last one of them swinging from telephone poles, street lights, or any other handy object isn't sitting too well.
