On April 29, 2004, as a service and tribute to members of the World War II Generation, the National World War II Memorial opened for public viewing, exactly one month prior to the formal Dedication Ceremony taking place May 29, 2004. The World War II Memorial is the first national memorial dedicated to all who served during the Second World War. The memorial, established by the American Battle Monuments Commission, honors all military veterans of the war, the citizens on the home front, the nation at large, and the high moral purpose and idealism that motivated the nation's call to arms. The Second World War is the only 20th-century event commemorated on the Mall's central axis. (from www.wwiimemorial.com)
Don't forget that you can watch the dedication today!! God Bless all of our Veterans & Active Duty!!! |

It's easy to sit at an online forum and be critical of those that are currently serving America. It's easy to do so because "I have relatives that have fought and thus I'm freaking better than you."
Here's a clue for that type of mentality:
We are honored at the Canteen for every Veteran and Active Duty member that shows up. We are honored to have family members of folks that have served past and present.
However, I'm not honored to have people around that feel this need to label all Sailors with typical BS stereotyping.
I have no need for that.
You did well. Heads High!

I'll be seeing Shorty (whom we call "BubbaChop") on his birthday, July Tenth. Then, I'll be going home again in August to see to the final packing of our stuff before shipment. Then, he and Mrs. Cut will move up here. I will have to drive her car up from Florida along with our two cats. They'll fly up.
I left home when he was a month old. Last time I was there, he didn't recognize me. My SON didn't recognize me. Jesus.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to spell daiquiri?
Google keeps asking me if I meant a different spelling. How should I know!
Just find me one. LOL!

Many, many people care.
LC....have you considered getting a couple story books and reading them into a tape recorder for Short Cut?
Every parent has some guilt at some times. Kathy mentioned a great idea for you -- one that I used!
My guilt was that from the time my daughter was almost age 4 (until she was 16), I was a single parent. I felt like such a failure because I wasn't providing her with a two-parent home. (Forget that her father got remarried LESS THAN A MONTH after the divorce. I carried, and still carry, a lot of guilt about my failures.) ... When she was younger, I recorded some of her favorite books on cassette so that she could listen to them when I was too busy to take much time to read to her or for her to listen to when she was having trouble falling asleep.
In your case, recorded books will give you a chance to bond with your son when -- through no fault of your own! -- you can't be there. ... In between stories, you can insert some "daddy loves YOU" and other messages. ... When I can't be there in person, I love giving "phone hugs." (Whatever "mmmmmmmmmmmmmm" sound that conveys you're squeezing the child in spirit.) Maybe you could include some of those in your tape, too.
In addition to recording books on cassette, you could also sing some favorite songs or recite some favorite nursery rhymes or poems. (The shorter Shel Silverstein poems are great for this!)
I no longer remember the author (but I can check the book my daughter now reads to her children if you like), but here's one I read to my daughter so often that I remember it still:
My name is Captain Jack.
I'm a tough old seafaring cat.
I've been to England, Spain, and France,
To Singapore and back.
I've walked the decks of many a ships.
I've guided many a crew.
Tomorrow I sail for Zanzibar.
I like to pretend, don't you!?

Another advantage to having your voice on cassette or CD!
The next you visit, your wife can cover your son's eyes when you enter the room and you can ask, "Guess who!?" -- and he'll know!!!

Mojo, one day in the future, when it doesn't affect my career, I'll tell you about the nightmares I've had since I've gotten back. And the Counseling I've had.
To see the posts I saw there about the Navy's "reputation" made me leave the thread, else I'd get banned.

I will tell you this...
I have never had to:
Leave my family behind...
Watch my children grow up through photographs..
face enemy fire...
Puke in a jet breaking Mach...(or not)
Sleep on bare ground...
Carry a wounded brother...
ButI DO know what it is to worry that my own brother would be MIA...or a POW...
I DO know that I am in awe of Uncommon Valor..
I DO know who I owe my freedom to.....

Now! Here's how we can deal with your issues being a man.
Since I can now officially understand that you will be "prone" to looking at "women" who are attractive "mentality", sexually, and physically, we need to put some safeguards up for you.
First, you are not allowed to watch commercials. Especially those beer commercials. Those are not acceptable because they can be considered pornographic.
Second, no going out to a restaurant such as "Hooters" because that could be considered pornographic.
Third, no watching any sporting events. God forbid they show women who are showing their "landscape" to the TV viewing public. After all, they all need to be wearing burkas for certain people to approve.
Fourth, you are not allowed to watch TV in general. If you see a baby's butt on TV, turn it off. That would be considered child pornography. No more diaper commercials. Absolutely appalling.
Fifth, absolutely no hanging around with any single military or civilian people. They tend to like looking at the opposite sex and that could be considered pornographic.
In other words, you must now be blindfolded. Or else we will consider you pornographic.
That is basically how that logic runs over there. LOL!

Alright, I will say this once more. Long cut, you are blessed. You have a wife who cares for you. You have a son who needs you. You have a job that needs you. And you have a Nation that needs you.
Imagine the child who never knew his dad, because his dad did not own up to his reponsibility.
You are there for your kid. You might not be able to tuck him in every night. But he has a dad. And a dad to look up to.

When I see a very attractive person, I point it out to my hubby. He usually says: "Um, if you think so" type statement.
Do you realize that would put me in the category of "unfaithful" because I had the nerve to point that out?
