Two Removed from Local Plane (Buffalo NY): Joked about 9-11 on flight

BREAKING NEWS: Two Removed from Local Plane WBEN Newsroom - Wednesday, May 26, 2004 11:35 AM

Cheektowaga, NY (WBEN) - Some tense moments on a Continental Express jet on the tarmac at Buffalo Niagara International Airport this morning. Two men were removed from the plane after allegedly "making jokes" about bombs and 9-11.

FBI Spokesman Paul Moskal tells NewsRadio 930 WBEN that a Canadian passenger overheard the men, described as being of Middle Eastern heritage, make jokes about bombs and the 9-11 terror attacks. The man notified a flight attendant, who notified the pilot, who then made the decision to turn the plane around and call the authorities.

Moskal says two agents are interviewing the men, but he tells WBEN he suspects the men made a mistake in judgement and did not pose a threat. That lapse in judgement comes on the heels of reports that a cell in America may be planning an act of terror this summer. U-S Attorney General John Ashcroft will have more in a news conference you can hear "live" on NewsRadio 930 WBEN beginning at 2pm.

Sources say the local flight, headed for Newark, New Jersey, was halted as a precaution, following the guidelines of the new Transportation Security Administration, which was established to increase security at airports, border crossings, and ports in the wake of 9-11. The plane has since left Buffalo.

ThinkDifferent,

Um, being a "sympathizer" is not a crime.

We are now at war and we are thinking differently.Being a sympathizer could now be considered a crime.

I had the radio on the other night and Savage nation was on. I don't normally listen to him but he was talking about the war on terror. He made the point that the recent FBI memo warned of signs of possible suicide bomber (Bulky coat, clenched fists, fake law enforcement or fire dept uniforms, dressing like a pregnant woman) He made the point that the biggest warning sign was missing from their memo. Middle Eastern Muslim Males. It is interesting that the nuts trying to kill us are the radical muslim extremists from the Middle East yet we go out of your way to avoid identifying them as suspects. He went on to say that profiling is needed to deal with terrorists, not doing so is aiding them and their attempts to kill Americans.

I think a repeat of my test from last year is in order.

"To ensure that we Americans never offend anyone -- particularly fanatics intent on killing us -- airport screeners will not be allowed to profile people. They will continue random searches of 80-year-old women, little kids, airline pilots with proper identification, Secret Service agents who are members of the President's security detail, 85-year old Congressmen with metal hips, and Medal of Honor-winning former Governors.

Let's pause a moment and take the following test:

In 1972, at the Munich Olympics, athletes were kidnapped and massacred by:
(a) Olga Corbutt
(b) Sitting Bull
(c) Arnold Schwarzenneger
(d) Muslim males between the ages of 17 and 40 <{> In 1979, the U.S. embassy in Iran was taken over by:
(a) Lost Norwegians
(b) Elvis
(c) A tour bus
(d) Muslim males between the ages of 17 and 40 <{> During the 1980's, a number of Americans were kidnapped in Lebanon by:
(a) John Dillinger
(b) The King of Sweden
(c) The Boy Scouts
(d) Muslim males between the ages of 17 and 40

In 1983, the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut was blown up by:
(a) A pizza delivery boy
(b) Pee Wee Herman
(c) Geraldo Rivera making up for a slow news day
(d) Muslim males between the ages of 17 and 40.

In 1985, the cruise ship Achille Lauro was hijacked, and a 70-year old American passenger was murdered and thrown overboard by:
(a) The Smurfs
(b) Davy Jones
(c) The Little Mermaid
(d) Muslim males between the ages of 17 and 40.

In 1985, TWA flight 847 was hijacked at Athens and a U.S. Navy diver was murdered by:
(a) Captain Kid
(b) Charles Lindbergh

(d) Muslim males between the ages of 17 and 40

In 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 was bombed by:
(a) Scooby Doo
(b) The Tooth Fairy
(c) Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid who had a few sticks of dynamite left over from the train job.
(d) Muslim males between the ages of 17 and 40

In 1993, the World Trade Center was bombed the first time by:
(a) Richard Simmons

"...funny joke, the punchline of which includes the words "boning knife"; "locked room"; and "men of Middle Eastern heritage who make jokes about 9/11."
Nah, keeping them in suspension (using a really broad ribbon, and not a piano wire) would be much more fun, depending on the suspension point, of course.

Should be covered under the existing sedition laws IMHO.

What we really need is to bring back McCarthy and sick him on this too.

........Joking about the deaths of 3,000 of my countrymen is not a "mistake in judgement" . . . it's asking to have your ass kicked.

I hate to fly. I wish - oh, how I wish - something like this would happen in front of me. Pounding on fanatics is quite therapeutic.

ROFL!
I'll bet you're the one who can do it too.

After reading Michelle Malkin's Invasion, I refuse to get on an airplane again.

And by the way: I am 37.

The USA team (U19) defeated Morocco the next day and sent three of there players to the hospital with injuries.

I enjoyed this story immensely!

"It is quite obvious how many Middle-Easterners feel about 9-11. Absense of condemnation said it all. This sort of anecdotal evidence only confirms the obvious conclusion. They are the enemy."

Yup.

Of course if they were WHITE males, they'd be jailed and the key melted in the lock with everything they own confiscated, especially guns.

Isn't that the truth? Our government officials need some serious adjustment of attitude and ideals.

And face it - "Middle Eastern Muslim Males" are those who are waved through airport security checks.

Because it would be 'insensitive'....

I'm with you; internment might be considered extreme, so here's what I suggest:

We declare a national emergency, and give ALL non-citizens of "Middle-Eastern Descent" (doesn't that sound ever so much better than "camel-jockeys?") the option of leaving the U.S. immediately, for an indeterminate period, or of submitting to internment in the event they feel they are "political refugees" from their home countries.

I agree that internment would be considered extreme, but something needs to be done. I would change your suggestion in one small way: Removing the choice.

Non-citizens of Middle Eastern Descent should leave the USA immediately OR be interned. Citizens of middle eastern descent can leave the country OR be required check in with local authorities on a weekly/monthly basis and account for their activities. Sort of like keeping an eye on sex offenders - only heightened.
