I'm with you; internment might be considered extreme, so here's what I suggest:
We declare a national emergency, and give ALL non-citizens of "Middle-Eastern Descent" (doesn't that sound ever so much better than "camel-jockeys?") the option of leaving the U.S. immediately, for an indeterminate period, or of submitting to internment in the event they feel they are "political refugees" from their home countries.

I agree that internment would be considered extreme, but something needs to be done. I would change your suggestion in one small way: Removing the choice.
Non-citizens of Middle Eastern Descent should leave the USA immediately OR be interned. Citizens of middle eastern descent can leave the country OR be required check in with local authorities on a weekly/monthly basis and account for their activities. Sort of like keeping an eye on sex offenders - only heightened.
