"Nick was real good at recognizing physical danger; it's part of the job," Scott Hollinger, the foreman for Prometheus Methods, said. "He didn't do too well at recognizing human danger because he never thought anybody was going to hurt him."

Based on everything I've seen or heard of Nick, he was one of the good guys. His father is a communist Fifth-Column sympathiser undeserving of such a man in his family.

This is one strange story. The father has managed to distract the "EVIL" done to his son, by his support of those who supported Saddam and his fellow travelers.

I am angered by this father, I resent sharing that horror of what was done to his son with his horror of blaming President Bush.

Based on what I've seen and heard of Nick...I don't know what to conclude.

He was either cursed with the sorriest run of bad luck one could have, or he was living the plot of a Robert Ludlum novel.

My guess is that Berg had a bounty on his head because he
was jewish. Someone turned him into AL-Queda for cash. Simple story. He was fair game and shouldn't have been over alone in the first place.

"Were it not for Nick's detention, I would have had him in my arms again," Mr. Berg's father, Michael, wrote...

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi? Who`s that?

Frankly, I think his father's influence may have made his son incredibly naive about the kind of people in the world, which may have led him to be less cautious than he should have been.

Thanks for posting this.

Nick seems to have lived his talented life to the fullest.

I wonder if Michael Berg is angry because he thought Nick was the next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs.

Maybe he hoped his investment in Prometheus would pay off. BIG.

American soldiers ordered the Iraqi guards to put him in a separate cell near political and war criminals from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran, Mr. Berg wrote.

In other words, Al Qaida operatives.

That sealed his doom, if true. Confirmation?

Wisdom cries in the streets...but this piece attempts to paint the folly of a fool as something romantic or innocent. To be winked at as simply a suburban white boy with a wide eyed perspective [much like they dismissed the treason of Taliban Johnny].

This kid was an idiot. I'm sorry he put himself in a position to embarrass our nation.

Nicholas E. Berg had a distinctive strategy for soliciting work for his communications tower company: conduct free spot inspections, then offer to fix any problems.

Oh sure, inspect my perfectly good tower for free and let me know how much repairs are going to cost.

"Were it not for Nick's detention, I would have had him in my arms again," Mr. Berg's father

Show me a video of Bush hacking away on Nick's neck with a dull sword. I'd get kicked off FR if I posted what I really feel about him.

wearing orange clothing, which, to some, looked like the jumpsuits worn by prisoners held by the American military.

Since when did we issue jumpsuits that are shiny like satin or such? Besides, if one looks closely the pattern or cut is different.

Mr. Berg was detained because his activities seemed suspicious, and once those suspicions were dispelled, he was released, they said.

According to a hotel aquaintance, he'd been arrested once before so with a second arrest of course they'd want to keep him a few days. Iraqi police or American military, it's not a mystery they needed to play hot potato with Nick.

That if they took the time, they'd like him."

Let all the people of the world hold hands and sing Kumbayah.

In 2000, he quit his studies in Norman and for more than a year wandered across Oklahoma and Texas

Convenient the Post left out he was arrested twice in the spring of 2000 for living in the student union building when he wasn't registered as a student. Moussaoui, Atta, Attas (a classmate), Hazmi, and Shehhi were also wandering across OK. Just my personal opininion formed from the Berg story and googling, I suspect it was Atta himself that Nick met up with. The timeline fits for Atta more so than Moussaoui. Notice the FBI has never given a name for the person whom Nick gave his computer, email account, and password. Can you imagine the hoopla if the FBI gave the name as Atta after they'd cleared Nick?!?

Through cold calls and free spot inspections, he had built a client list of 50 companies by 2003.

What, no return customers? Hmm, wasn't he supposed to have gone to Iraq twice and planned on a third trip because he didn't have business prospects here? Sorry, these folks really should stick with the original script.

Another took him north to Mosul.

To see his uncle, Moffak Mustaffa, who also warned him about the dangers. Geez, another convenient ommission by the Post.

He had never been to Iran but was carrying a book about Iran and some Farsi language materials, he wrote.

Doesn't speak Farsi and has no intentions of going to Iran, okay. For someone who packs light with only his tool belt and a backpack why was he lugging these books? I suspect Nick was playing a game that was out of his league and lost.
