Democrat Sen. Tim Johnson, who barely "won" in South Dakota's fraud-plagued election of 2002, refuses to apologize for referring to Republicans as a Taliban.
Appearing Sunday with Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle at an event in Sioux Falls for U.S. House candidate Stephanie Herseth, Johnson said: "When Stephanie Herseth fills this seat, we are going to have a rising star in the House of Representatives. And how sweet it's going to be on June 2 when the Taliban wing of the Republican Party finds out what's happened in South Dakota."
Herseth's GOP opponent, Larry Diedrich, issued a statement Monday saying: "I am deeply disappointed and offended by Senator Johnson's comments. Our campaign has the support of farmers, seniors, young adults, and just so many folks throughout our great state - and to insult them by likening them to the Taliban is simply unconscionable."
Johnson's handler Julianne Fisher said today that the senator would not apologize. She claimed that two years ago outside groups compared Johnson to Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden. She failed to say which groups.
'Terrible Hypocrisy'
Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie said today: "In a recent speech, Tom Daschle expressed his disappointment over the coarsening of political discourse in this country. Daschle's refusal to repudiate these reprehensible comments made by a member of his own party are a sign of terrible hypocrisy at best or a striking lack of moral courage at worst."
The obstructionist Daschle himself faces a serious challenge in November from GOP candidate John Thune. Democrats have reserved their outrage for Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, who has dared to campaign for Thune.
America's most famous former Ku Klux Klansman, Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia, recently raged: "What has become of civility, old-fashioned civility? What has become of comity? What has become of comity in this branch? It used to be unheard of for Senate leaders to seek an active role against each other in campaigns. That time has apparently gone. Gone! Has honor gone too? Who cares about honor when a Senate seat might be gained?"
So far the ex-Klansman has failed to comment on Johnson's "civility" and "honor," or lack thereof.

I forgot about jumpin jim jeffords.
Of course it's those nasty Republicans and right-wingers who engage in all that hate speech and personal attacks! Double standard alert!
It was one of those "I'm sorry IF..." apologies I never got away with as a child.
"Tim Johnson says he's sorry if the remark he made offended anyone."
""Tim Johnson says he's sorry if the remark he made offended anyone."
It SHOULD offend everyone in the country and especially the families of the victims of 9/11
Sadly it won't because the "mainstream" media won't talk about this.
Problem is, they don't like each other, so there is no acceptable candidate.
The democrats being the party of tolerance is like islam being a religion of peace.
The Democrats are all for understanding and reaching out to the real Taliban in Afghanistan and Iraq - how come it's an insult when attached to conservative Republicans, but not Islamist fascist barbarians?
Here's betting every South Dakotan knows about this, and were offended by it. That's all that matters.
Good. The gloves are officially off. Johnson has set the tone for the contest. Go for the jugular Mr. Diedrich.
;)
Nice Sephiroth drawing Calpernia!
I hope this results in a better outcome for Thune and Diedrich. This recent outrage has energized the South Dakota GOP!
What is it with Johnson and Pelosi going off the deep end? (That might be nice in S.D., to tie Johnson and the Dems to S.F. Pelosi and her screed.) They are going to turn off the swing voters, so it is clear that the Dems have decided that red meat for their masses is the order of the day. I don't think it is going to work.

See this Michelle Malkin article about Robert Byrd from March 7, 2001
Former KKK Clansman,

Related note, my rant:Ted Kennedy: "On March 19, 2004, President Bush asked, 'Who would prefer that Saddam's torture chambers still be open?
"Shamefully, we now learn that Saddam's torture chambers reopened under new management: U.S. management."
What sort of dysfunctional moral compass must one have to make such a comparison?
Kennedy should resign his Senate seat. He is a disgrace. I can't imagine the people that continue to vote for this piece of trash.
Reposting my comments from above thread:
While the media is working against the Bush administration, I think I agree that these Monsters would have done this anyway and ARE using that as an excuse.
Excerpt from them to Senator Ted Kennedy, Robert Byrd and other anti-American U.S. Senators, from an email intercepted yesterday:
"Please keep up the great work in helping our cause, you fine people. Please make sure word gets out that this was in retaliation for the Iraqi Prisoner Abuse. This would be especially helpful in your next TV appearance before whatever investigation of the Bush Administration is coming up down the road. It is great to have folks over there that are on OUR side. You make us happy. Thank you ....."*
*above red text is FICTIONAL, btw.
Looks like it's time to kick the tires and light the fires!
