Her little face was scrunched up...as only a six year old can be when attempting to be a 'big girl' and not cry.
Her normal reaction to the news that her daddy was finally home would be to run and jump into his arms and hug his neck with all the power her little arms could muster.
She would smell the familiar 'Daddy Smell'....and bury her little tiny face into her daddy's neck...happy to be just holding her daddy once again.
But this time...it was different.
This time there would be no hugs...
This time there would be no joy at the sight of her daddy...
..this time her daddy was arriving home, carried by other men, in a coffin....in a box .

In a few short days it will be Memorial Day.
A day set aside, with hope, for us to remember, and maybe say a small "Thank You", to those who have given their time and,for some, their lives in defense of our Nation and our Freedom's.
And yet...maybe this Memorial Day we need to add one more thing to the list.
Especially THIS Memorial Day.
We need to remember all those who lost their fathers.....
We need to remember all those who lost their sons.....
We need to remember all those who lost their husbands......
We need to remember all those who lost their brothers.....
In reality there is nothing we can really do...to make up for the lost hugs....for the lost talks with 'Big Brother'.....for the lost times with our sons.....for the lost futures.
But we can, and indeed we should, express our gratitude....our thanks.
Maybe...this Memorial Day...we can begin a new tradition.
Maybe we can, I know we should, begin to Thank those 'Left Behind'.
Maybe we can also make it a day to remember the sacrifices that they have made.
God bless you thanks for the service, and your picture is all the reason anyone needs for why we fight.
Well , you should not be ashamed of a few manly tears!
Your heart would have to be made of stone, else! ;-)
( And thank you for your service! )
Thanks for your service. I'm so glad you made it back to those adorable kids, and the Mom who has clearly been taking good care of them. You can see it in their faces.

My Girl Scout troop will be posting flags at Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo, CA this Saturday morning. There are a number of gardens dedicated to veterans and we will be posting an American flag on each and every one of them.
And that's a very good thing...thank you!
BTTT!!
Thank you for doing this redrock!!
Another Memorial Day. They seem to get sadder and sadder.
To quote Rudy Guliani on 9/11(sp?)" The loss is more than we can bear".
You're holding in your arms...2 of the reasons you wear the uniform.
2 of the most important reasons......
Welcome Home!!!

God Bless our troops and their families
Thank you redrock. People need to remember that Memorial Day is not just a day off, not just a day for picnics, it's a day to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
Thanks for the reminder and the ping.
Ya done good.
The Democrats hope it's the latter.
But...we can bear it.
After all....we're a little different than the rest of the world.
We're Americans....and, unlike the rest of the world, we are not united by race...or tribal affiliation...or who our parents were.
IF you believe in Freedom...and are willing to fight for that Freedom...then you can be a part of our 'tribe'.
