Christians are called to preach the Gospels and to covert non-believers and have been doing so for 2000 years. I fail to see how listening to the call to prayer is trying to convert anyone to become a Muslim.

Xians also don't do the Danny Pearl when you don't convert, either.

When the Jehovah's come knocking at my door, I politely send them on their way, secure in the knowledge that they won't firebomb my car in the driveway. I get no such assurances from those who drove aircraft into The Towers and killed innocent Americans.

You totally missed my point. If the call is so loud that it violates the city's noise ordinance, then I agree that it should not be broadcast. But for people, specifically Christians who have been pushing Christianity on others for centuries, to say that they shouldn't have to listen to this or that because it's not their religion is hypocritical. It violates freedom of religion and speech in that those who oppose based on those types of arguments want the city to disallow the call based on those arguments, not on the noise issue.

Maybe a better analogy would be Gregorian Chant. And as beautiful as I think it is (as distinct from the caterwauling of the call to prayer by the Muslims), still I wouldn't want to be disturbed from my slumber with a heavy dose of plainsong over a loud speaker.

That was already determined. It was. They received a WAIVER so that they wouldn't have to obey the noise ordinance.

If you think the Mohammedans wanted this just to "call their faithful" to prayer, you're dead wrong.

This is an "in your face" message by the Mohammedan community to America.

Simply read the account of the Mohammedans who were instrumental in getting this ordinance passed (paraphrase): "This is the first step. Today it's here, tomorrow, all of America will be hearing our call to prayer."

The message is: Islam is your future.

I always thought Allah must be a rather puny third-rate God (if he could even be considered a god at all), as he's so darned insecure-- has to be prayed to 5 times a day-- women are subserviant to men ... etc. Makings of a boy's only death cult. Not very advanced or enlightened.
