The first of these steps will occur next month, when our coalition will transfer full sovereignty to a government of Iraqi citizens who will prepare the way for national elections. On June 30th, the Coalition Provisional Authority will cease to exist, and will not be replaced.

This is the most important part of the speech. Kerry the Flipper is spinning about now.

Sat glued to the set. I thought it was a great speech, very succinct, and should help bring up the ratings. Shame on the alphabet stations who didn't want the public to see and hear him.

So, in a nutshell these are his five steps:

There are five steps in our plan to help Iraq achieve democracy and freedom:

The first of these steps will occur next month, when our coalition will transfer full sovereignty to a government of Iraqi citizens who will prepare the way for national elections.(June 30th)

The second step in the plan for Iraqi democracy is to help establish the stability and security that democracy requires.

The third step in the plan for Iraqi democracy is to continue rebuilding that nation's infrastructure so that a free Iraq can quickly gain economic independence and a better quality of life.

The fourth step in our plan is to enlist additional international support for Iraq's transition.

The fifth, and most important step is free national elections, to be held no later than next January.

He missed so many golden opportunities to ELABORATE on SUCCESSES that they've already had with these five steps that I feel it was a bomb of a speech.

People WANT SPECIFICS. How many hospitals or schools were reopened. Have some happy kids images in the backdrop (be creative) or something. SOMETHING that shows some POSITIVE emotion and GOOD progress.

He's got to do better than this if he wants to win the election. It's almost looking like he's running away from the problem because of no successes. He's playing into the hands of the liberal media. This was disappointing.

Unfortunately, someone has to say the following so I'll fall on my saber. We are losing the war in Iraq for one reason, we simply aren't as committed as the insurgents. We lose one soldier, we fall to pieces and the great hue and cry calls out for 1) a pull out or 2) putting more boots on the ground (without the requisite homeland sacrifices).

The insurgents lose 40-50 in one battle and they keep coming, they never stop, and they will never stop until we are gone one way or another. There is a brilliance in that kind of committment (we had it when we fought the Brits during the Revolutionary War, we had it during WWII).

My suggestion, as I slide further down on my petard, is for this nation to put away its childish things (SUVs, idiotic reality TV shows, an infantile dependency on being entertained) and accept the years of hard sacrifices that must be made to win this war.

This is only the first of six weekly speeches to educate the public on what is going on. The message will get out. But he was right, first step was to outline the plan.

He's playing into the hands of the liberal media.

No. He isn't.

He's speaking to the American people and telling them the truth that the liberal media wants to keep hidden.

This was disappointing.

No. It wasn't.

The President told the truth. He has a plan. It's working.

The American people need to know what's really happening without the hideous bias of the leftist media.

Wow…I just noticed that NBC decided not to air the Presidents address. Instead they aired “Fear Factor”! I guess it’s more important to show a contest in which a bunch of fools try to out do one another, by seeing who can scoop out the most live maggots with their mouths, then to show the President trying to explain what the heck is going on in Iraq. Good job NBC!

The article was by a visiting professor at the Army War College, not the concensus of the college.

No, I'm not falling for anything. History has seen this level of committment before (Viet Cong, Mujahadeen, Colonialists, etc.) and you'll notice that in the long run, they always drive out the occupying force. (Not because the occupying force lacked superior firepower, but because the will of the nation wasn't there).

So when are the Republicans going to implement a change in the FCC Regulations that give away valuable RF space to the big three channels so they can use it to advance their treasonous agenda? All they have to do is hold an auction! They've done this for the radio spectrum! Do it for the TV channels and let the goddam prix at ABC, CBS, and NBC whistle for their broadcast venues! And let's not even get into the PBS bullshit! I swear; the Republicans are absolutely amazing at how they let the enemy set the agenda and the terms of conflict, both foreign AND domestic!

"We are losing the war in Iraq for one reason, we simply aren't as committed as the insurgents."

Show me another conflict or war with a lower percentage of casualties. I don't know what standard you are using to measure "winning" vs. "losing." The coalition is kicking the butts of the mideast nuts and that's the reason for their increased craziness, which WILL INCREASE the closer it comes to the turnover to Iraqi sovereignty.

Are you, in fact, a deeply embedded DU member; I suspect so.

Well said, Chu Gary!

All:

I felt that this part of the president's speech told the whole story in a nutshell as to why we are there. President Bush gets the big picture:

"The rise of a free and self-governing Iraq will deny terrorists a base of operation, discredit their narrow ideology, and give momentum to reformers across the region. This will be a decisive blow to terrorism at the heart of its power, and a victory for the security of America and the civilized world."
