E.L. Doctorow, one of the most celebrated writers in America, was nearly booed off the stage at Hofstra University Sunday when he gave a commencement address lambasting President George W. Bush and effectively calling him a liar.

Booing that came mainly from the crowd in the stands became so intense that Doctorow stopped speaking at one point...

Doctorow, who spent virtually all of his 20-minute address in Hempstead criticizing Bush, told the crowd that like himself the president is a storyteller. But "sadly they are not good stories this president tells," he said. "They are not good stories because they are not true." That line provoked the first boos, along with scattered cheers.

...Those lines provoked an outburst of boos so loud the "Ragtime" author stopped the speech... He attacked Bush for giving the rich tax breaks, doing "a very poor job of combating terrorism" and allowing the government to subpoena libraries "to see what books you've been taking out."

Many parents and relatives were livid over the address... Bill Schmidt, 51, of North Bellmore, shared the outrage. "To ruin my daughter's graduation with politics is pathetic" ...

One Hofstra official said Sunday that while Doctorow had the right to say what he did, he violated the unwritten code that college commencement speeches should inspire and unite a student body. Provost Dr. Herman Berliner said he has been to numerous graduation ceremonies during the past 30 years and "I cannot remember a commencement speech that was as divisive as this commencement speech was."

If this author is half as "celebrated" as the article states, then he no doubt was one of the "rich" who benefited from Bush's tax cut.

So do you think he refused the extra money on April 15th?

Good old E.L. Doctorow... I remember reading "white Noise", Doctorow's screed against Reagan and the America he represented. In that book, the conservative narrator is Chairman of the "Hitler Studies" Department at a Midwestern college. It's a ham-handed attempt to mock American culture, consumerism, blah blah blah.

There was another speaker at an Eastern university a few days ago who was also booed off stage for anti-Bush comments in his speech.

Grads don't want their commencement politicized by the libs.

Many students also called Doctorow's speech inappropriate. Peter Hulse, 24, of Manchester, England, said, "He's a bit like Michael Moore," the documentary director who provoked booing at last year's Oscars' ceremony by criticizing the war in Iraq.

Well there you go.

"I guess he should be glad no loose fruit was nearby."

LOL. A new era of rowdy audiences and rotten tomatoes may be just around the corner, since these puffed-up souls can't seem to honor the code of tact.

I guess I'm out of touch. What has he written and why haven't I heard of it?

No, you're not out of touch. It's just that liberals buy lots of books by 'authors' like this. Not that they read them. They just like having them on coffee tables so they can show their fellow liberals on the cocktail-party circuit how 'enlightened' they are.

But it's their last chance at brainwashing the future leaders of America, and making little mental clones of themselves in the minds of their students!

In Koontz' "One Door Away From Heaven" he rips Gray Davis up and down then right and back.

Just finished Jonathan Kellerman's "Murder Book." The first three-quarters are great then winds up with a real crappy ending. He does zing Clinton.

Kellerman is one of the few authors I read that makes abortionists look very, very bad.

Now, granted his second main character is a practicing homosexual. OTOH, Kellerman is paradoxically pretty sympathetic to religious fundamentalists.

I never saw that movie, nor can I recall anyone urging me to do so, although I remember its release.

It kind of bugs me to hear this guy referred to in this way when it is apparently false. I can think of a couple dozen celebrated authors who are still alive, perhaps more. This loser ain't one of them.

E.L.,

Next time, suit your speech content to the context, genius.

Oh, and Ragtime sucked.

I would have marched up into the middle of the grads, found my child and walked out via the center aisle. That would have been the kind of role model I'd have been.

Hooray!! That would have been my exact same move, except after I got to my son, I would have said, "Hey let's go up front and boo this a$$hole real loud in his face, then we'll leave".

I am sure he would have smiled and beat me to the front!

Some Hofstra professors said Doctorow was on target in discussing the war. "I thought this was a totally appropriate place to talk about politics because that's the world our students are entering," said sociology professor Cythnia Bogard. "I only wish their parents had provided them a better role model."

Another example of the true leftist agenda. Maybe I am reading this wrong, but to me it appears Ms. Bogard believes that parents are incapable of being role models to their children.

That is probably the most sickening thing I have read in a long, long time. The majority of students didn't sit quietly and accept the hate and lies spouted at their commencement, and this leftist says their reaction is because of a lack of good parents.

Just amazing.
