Map of Glynn County and barrier islands:
Break out the tents!
...and man the pumps! Batten down the hatches, maties!
Seriously, it's already getting congested- I had about 4 near wrecks this morning- strangers who didn't know where the "H" they were going suddenly darting across 3 or 4 lanes of traffic without signals.
I am going to try to fetch some better maps to illustrate how the mainland & barrier islands are laid out, how the causeways look, and why these annoying protesters have no earthly idea of what problems they face merely trying to get around, let alone get into secure areas.
OK, I can't link to a better map, but click here to see more details of the mainland, islands, and causeways:

See all that blue-white area with sprigs? That is salt marsh- you can't walk through it without bogging down. It accounts for much of the apparent land mass in the islands and mainland, and this means you just can't set out to go from point A to B without using a road or crossing watery areas. That's one impediment. And then...
St. Simons is separated from the mainland by two Intercoastal waterways- the Frederica and Back Rivers, and they are deep enough for pushboats ( wrongly called tugs ) and cruise ships. Plus there are many smaller rivers, creeks, and bog-holes 'twixt Brunswick and SSI. The Torras Causeway is the only way besides boats or aircraft- and these will be easily controlled.
Once you reach Saint Simons ( SSI ) there's one more causeway- the Sea Island Causeway- to cross before getting anywhere close to the G8 gathering.
There is one other little thing outsiders know nothing about- both Brunswick and SSI are so old that many, many streets change names, veer off in weird directions, and generally don't go where you thing they ought to- it really confuses non-natives. I grew up giving directions to lost & befuddled tourists.

G-8's effect still vague
"I think you have to be realistic about what will be achieved," Bates said. "It may well help promote tourism, but if you're talking about manufacturing investment, it would be a tall order to expect one conference to have that kind of effect."

Residents seek G-8 answers
Hey guys, here is link you might find interesting regarding the protesters that will show up at the G8 summit.
It is written in a psudeo scientific vein with various pics from a proteat in DC around the end of April this year.

I note with bemusement that many protesters seem to bear a grudge against "corpratism..." guess they never held an honest job in their fruitless lives. Wonder how they earn a living?
On a side note, my wife reports that a local TV report intoned seriously about "the secret nature of many military checkpoints" while filming said checkpoint with the Jekyll Island water tower rising in the background behind it...
My wife is from Brunswick, I love going there to visit her folks. They've gone to New England to visit relatives this week. Smart move!
Believe me, I'd leave if I could. The scuttlebutt my wife hears at work says folks who need medicine or medical attention on Saint Simons should allow for a 3-hour delay in clearing all the roadblocks to the islands.
I plan on taking back roads to the store, and avoiding US 17 entirely.

I noticed something a long, long time ago- our opponents on the Left simply hate not being taken seriously- or worse, being laughed at. Drives 'em nuttier than they already are...

G-8 full of hidden costs
"We're hoping for the best, kind of planning for the worst ... I think there are some prudent things you can do without necessarily thinking the sky's falling."

Protesters eye college for G-8 site
Last week, Brunswick officials said Howard Coffin Park might be available for demonstrators. Mayor Brad Brown said that site was on hold while negotiations occur for the college campus.
These are professional "protestors" who have time on their hands and money to burn following G-8, hauling their papier-mache heads, pink cardboard tanks, & other paraphernalia all over the planet.
Oh, absolutely!
I call then Professional Malcontents- if it weren't this, they'd be whining about some other vaporous "injustice."
Visit their sites and links and note well their hyperventilating over Israel, "corpratism," and other imagined evils in the world.
I note with annoyance that we are already in a state of emergency, starting this Monday, and my planned back-roads route to the store has portable signboards by the road, indicating that it, too, will be under enhanced scrutiny. Pests!
My question is, who pays for all this buffoonery?
Obviously none of these "people" have full time jobs or they would not be able to pick up and follow the G8 so easily, especially to a lot of the conference venues which are at expensive resorts.
But if they don't work where are they getting the money from?
Soros???
That really is the $64 question- from the hostility evinced by their slogans, I'd guess few have ever worked for a living, and are sorts of parasites collecting grants, welfare, or other types of support.
If you could track the money, you would find who really lies behind this "anti" movement.
I can tell you this- they are no friends of America, Israel, business in general, or freedom.
