Moore on Bush (Lumpy Riefenstahl says Bush blocking film that will blow apart his reelection bid)

US President George W Bush's election hopes could be blown apart by a film to be shown at the Cannes film festival, which is why the White House is trying to keep it out of US theatres, claims its director, Michael Moore.

Fahrenheit 911, which gets its premiere today, is a powerful documentary exploring Bush's actions after the September 11, 2001 attacks, the Bush's family's long commercial relationship with Osama bin Laden and the Iraq war, he said.

But it is also, Moore said, a tool which would inspire US voters to remove "the dumbest man who ever ran for the presidency" and overturn foreign policies which have created "a lot of havoc in the world".

The maverick director -- whose appearance at a conference hosted by the US movie industry magazine Variety was one of the hottest tickets at the festival -- alleged that the White House was behind a campaign to stop the film from being distributed in the United States before the November presidential election.

An unnamed senior Republican politician, "someone connected to the White House", telephoned companies that bankrolled the film to get them to drop their commitments to it, he said.

Even though production company Miramax is now seeking a deal to buy out the US rights to the film after parent group Disney reneged on a distribution deal, Moore said, nothing has yet resulted that would allow the film to come out in the United States.

"That's the intent in trying to stop this film -- so people don't see it before the election," he said.

The fiercely left-wing director, who won an Oscar for his last documentary, Bowling for Columbine, which also won a prize at Cannes two years ago, said the new documentary included much footage from Iraq -- some of it by crews who managed to spend much time with US military units.

"You will see things not seen before, you will learn things not known before," he said.

He vowed that Americans would see the documentary soon, even if it took illegal means, and that once it was widely seen, Bush and his government would realise their political future is "totally fucked", Moore said.

"I want this film out and I want it out this summer. After, I'll have things to say," he said after explaining his uncharacteristic muting of criticism of Disney.

The hulking, bearded filmmaker, wearing his usual baseball cap, said he was prepared for a backlash by many compatriots, but stated that "I'm the most patriotic American" because he believes in the United States' founding principles.

"One of those principles is that you do not invade another country that is not invading you," he said, hinting at the tone his documentary takes.

"Only people who are un-American would cover up the torture and abuse in Iraq," he added, making reference to recently published photographs showing US soldiers humiliating and terrorising Iraqi prisoners.

Moore's film is not the only one delving into the topicality of the Iraq war and Bush at the Cannes festival, though it is the only one that has a shot at Cannes's Palme d'Or prize.

Uncovered: The War on Iraq, a documentary to be shown in the presence of former US ambassador and Bush critic Joseph Wilson, is to be shown out of competition, as is Bush's Brain, a documentary about the president's political adviser, Karl Rove.

On a commercial level, all these productions are looking to reproduce the success of Moore's Bowling for Columbine, which cost about $US4 million ($A6 million) to make but reaped 30 times that much, about $US120 million around the world.

These are also movies which have something to say: something Moore and the other directors believe can change the country they live in -- and something Bush would prefer not to see on the big screen.

Nobody is "blocking" his film, and he knows it.

Sure he does.

He could:

Release it directly to DVD and let the libs run out and buy it.

Arrange for a network or cable premier, to get the most coverage.

Post it on streaming video on his web site.

Nah! We don't need to bring the draft back and draft him. Let's just exile him and have him sent to live among his "buddies". After all, Bush is so almighty and powerful (after all Moore says Bush is keeping the theatres from showing his film and Stern says Bush is responsible for his trash talk not being accepted. not to much that anytime someone breaks a nail it's Bush's fault)that I he should just be able to nod his head and it shall be done.

This is so contrived it's pathetic. That miserable pantload wishes his film could do such damage. Dream on, Mikey.

Moore knows the value of "the big lie".

It looks like he may be well over 400 pounds. He is really taking a risk with his health here.

Michael Moore reveals the content of his next film at the end of this UK article:

Fahrenheit 9/11 could light fire under Bush

Charlotte Higgins, arts correspondent

Monday May 17, 2004

The Guardian

Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 is without doubt the most flaming-hot ticket at the Cannes film festival. And with good reason: Moore hopes that it will bring down the US government.

The American film-maker has hitherto kept a tight lid on the contents of the documentary, saying only that it includes evidence of alleged links between the Bush and Bin Laden families. However, in two appearances in Cannes at the weekend before its premiere today, he revealed that the movie contains shocking footage from Iraq.

Yesterday he said: "When you see the movie you will see things you have never seen before, you will learn things you have never known before. Half the movie is about Iraq - we were able to get film crews embedded with American troops without them knowing that it was Michael Moore. They are totally f*cked."

On Saturday he said: "The film is only partly to do with the Bin Ladens and Bush. I was able to send three different freelance film crews to Iraq. Soldiers had written to me to express their disillusionment with the war. It's a case of our own troops not being in support of their commander-in-chief."

He said that at the few low-key preview screenings that have already taken place in the midwest "the reactions were overwhelming. People who were on the fence - undecided voters - suddenly weren't on the fence any more."

Moore was unequivocal about his desire to do everything in his power to help oust President George Bush in this November's elections.

"We thought, 'We cannot leave this to the Democrats this time to f*ck it up and lose.'" He wants, he said, to "inspire people to get up and vote in November."

There has already been a complicated saga over the distribution of the film. At the start of the month it became clear that Disney, the parent company of Miramax - which made Fahrenheit 9/11 - was refusing to distribute it in the US.

The film currently has distribution, according to Moore, in every other country except Taiwan.

After a baffling series of rumours and counter-rumours last week, it was revealed that Disney was allowing Bob and Harvey Weinstein, who run Miramax, to buy back their interest in the film so they could seek an alternative distributor. After a fortnight, none has yet been found.

The reasons for Disney's refusal, Moore claimed, were purely political, aimed at delaying the film's release and thus preventing Americans from seeing the explosive material it contains before the election.

"The past year we knew that Michael Eisner [CEO of Disney] was not happy about Miramax making the film but they kept on sending the money every month," Moore said on Saturday. "At the end of April they sent an executive to look at the film. They had a board meeting and five days later they decided not to distribute it, because of its political content."

Yesterday he said: "That's the reason for the blocking: so that Americans don't see it before the election."

He added: "I won't let that happen, and neither will Harvey [Weinstein]. People will see this film, by hook or by crook. I will get this out if it means breaking the law or committing an act of civil disobedience."

Eisner has previously denied that there was anything sinister about Disney's decision to block distribution. "We're such a nonpartisan company," he said. "[People] do not look for us to take sides."

The contract between Disney and Miramax states that Disney can refuse to distribute a film in certain cases, for instance if it has an NC-17 rating - the US equivalent of an 18 certificate. Under such circumstances Miramax has in the past found alternative distribution - for Dogma, a 1999 satire on the Catholic church, and Larry Clark's Kids, eventually released in 1995, which shocked many with its frank depiction of sex among teenagers.

Moore is clearly furious with the company. "I have a lot to say about Disney. It is very dangerous to give someone like me a peek behind the curtain. I will tell all as soon as the [distribution] negotiations have ended," he said on Saturday.

The film-maker is also unhappy with the way the controversy has been handled in the media.

"The press have said, 'Isn't it great for the movie?' But the last two times this happened - with Dogma and Kids - you only have to look at the box office to see that the controversy didn't help. No film-maker wants this to happen.

"I don't like the message this sends, which is, 'Don't even think of making a movie like [Fahrenheit 9/11] - it won't get distributed.' This is a chilling effect it will have. Five men and one woman [the Disney board] make a decision about what Americans can see. This is not a sign of an open and healthy society."

Moore's position has not met with universal sympathy. A piece in the Los Angeles Times last week accused his last film, Bowling for Columbine, of being "a torrent of partial truths, pointed omissions and deliberate misimpressions" and called him a "virtuoso of fictions".

But Moore has no plans to shut up shop just yet. He is planning films "on the Israelis and Palestinians, and the oil industry and lack of oil we are going to be faced with".

Looks too fat for gastric bypass to me. On a large frame like that he probably is way more than 100 pounds overweight. Probably would have to lose 50 lbs before he qualifies.

If you want a serious answer...

The international covers of MM's books display him with lots and lots of American flags/symbols... Stupid Fat White Man et al don't have American symbols on it.

MM makes waaaaaaay more off international sales than domestic sales. He sold something like 3 times more copies of his lastest book in Germany alone than in the USA.

Why do the international publishers insist on wrapping him around American flags?

Because they WANT to associate Michael Moore with the typical American--ugly, fat, sloppy, brash, crude, loud. They're saying, "Look, this is Michael Moore, the typical American, telling you what America REALLY is about!"

So, his ugliness does sell books overseas. Somehow I don't see him selling nearly as many bash-America books if he looked like Brad Pitt.

I feel almost sorry for him.
