May 14, 2004 -- A MAN has his head cut off by al Qaeda in Iraq, and The New York Times aggressively markets the idea - on its front page yesterday - that his death is somehow the fault of the United States. "The family of Nicholas E. Berg challenged American military officials on Wednesday," according to lead paragraph in the Times' story, "insisting that the man beheaded by Islamic terrorists in Iraq had earlier been in the custody of federal officials who should have done more to protect him."

"Berg's own grief-deranged kin"
No, just deranged.
Absolutely tremendous read.
BUMP!!
WOW! John, way to go.
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I'VE READ AN EDITORIAL THAT CALLS KENNEDY ON WHAT HE DID.
Please forgive the caps, but this is big. Podhoretz has finally thrown it out there for everyone to read.
Let's watch and see if they're scandalized -- or if they ignore it completely.
I haven't seen anything from the mother yet. I wonder why?

big deal John
And as far as Chapaquiddick Fats: he should shove a cork in his booze hole. Lord Haw Haw was hung for less.

Something I have wondered more than once. When Father Berg got the news and "collapsed to the ground" with sorrow--why was he outside? Doesn't this seem strange that news of this magnitude would be given outdoors instead of inside a house? Did Berg want a major photo op?
Podhoretz hits another one out of the park. Rather than being outraged at the conduct of the left, I am saddened. There was a time when the left was a vital part of the two-party system and played an integral role in balancing US policy. Today, they are only about power, anger and hate.
Perhaps that's that question that Time should have been referring to when they asked "How Did It Come to This?" After all, it was FDR who lead us into WWII and laid the foundations that ultimately lead to victory. How did the Democrat Party stray from FDR's leadership to today's venomous, hate-filled political party? Inquiring minds really want to know.
No matter what happens in the war with Iraq, no matter what the evildoers do, the Times wants to bring it back to high-level American misconduct - misconduct so severe that it supposedly calls the entire mission in Iraq into question. To blame the United States for Berg's beheading might be acceptable for Berg's own grief-deranged kin. But it is not acceptable for The New York Times or anyone else. The Times is leading the mainstream media in turning the United States into the bad guys in Iraq. But it is far from alone.
Take a look at Time magazine's cover this week. It features an artist's rendering of one of the photographs from Abu Ghraib with the line: "Iraq: How Did It Come to This?"
"It" didn't come to "this." "It" is a war to liberate 25 million people and rout Islamic extremists, terrorists and those who thirst for the mass murder of Americans. "This" was an aberrancy that was stopped almost five months ago, when the revelations at Abu Ghraib led to investigations, arrests and the wholesale reinvention of the Iraq prison system.
Well, you have to look at the bright side of this: Only in America can an openly-treasonous newspaper operate with impunity. In most other countries of the world -- Europe included -- such a newspaper would be shut down and its publishers summarily arrested.
So is the PaleoCon opinion. I had one PaleoCon -- a former member of FR in good standing -- tell me that he takes solace in the return of US soldiers in body bags.
"If she had lived, Mary Jo Kopechne would be 62 years old. Through his tireless work as a legislator, Edward Kennedy would have brought comfort to her in her old age."
- Charles Pierce, in the Boston Globe.
What can I add?
precisely!
Outstanding article.
