Just after the Sept. 11 attacks, Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz, fond of presenting himself as a civil libertarian, published an op-ed piece in the Los Angeles Times in which he argued that "if we are to have torture, it should be authorized by the law,"

I remember this incident, or article. I wonder if the "Brain" has made any recent comments concerning the recent affair of the head chopping of a civilian by Islamic fanatics! Please pardon the redundancy!

Here'a a quick test:

Which of these two incidents is the greater?

1. The amount of time that the Iraqui prisoners were "abused." Obviously they were only imprisoned for minor traffic violations and jaywalking.

2. The amount of time it took for Mary Jo Kopechne to drown while Ted Kennedy was fabricating his alibi with the help of his cousin, Joe Gargan?

Actual Dunking Stool is a genuine replica of a 1969 Oldsmobile. (mileage may vary)

Well it shouldn't involve anyone but the CIA. Letting guard units get involved guaranteed that pictures and methods would get leaked.

Not if it involves permanently maiming or crippling an individual. If it's only pain, continuing discomfort, or mental torment, the exigencies of war might well allow for it, depending on the circumstances. Remember, though, that what we sanction to be used on others can be used on our own.

They should have used my idea instead (though my method would have drawn more rath from liberals and the press...not to mention the A.C.L.U.). I proposed that we play the audio Bible (our Bible) in Arabic from Genesis to Revelations over an intercom system 24 hours day and night, seven days a week with nice Aramaic background music to an Arabic narator like the equivalent of an Alexander Scorby... There would be breaks at times for Christian hyms sung in Arabic and teaching tapes by well-respected preachers who were converted former muslims who now preach and teach in Arabic that Islam is a lie and Y'shua is the only way to eternal life.<p.

With the Holy Spirit and the angels working in the background, I wounder what sort of effet it would have had? If nothing else, to Fedayeen and Al Qaeda...it would either be salvation or torture.

I think it is possible to use torture and be doing right but only in extreme circumstances.

It should never be a routine thing and if other methods such as truth serum would work as well then that should be used instead.

Probably should require approval by a high officer with guidelines established except perhaps in exigent circumstances.

Torture could be an option under certain circumstances...of course.

...but not as routine.

> Some acts of warfare, like some intelligence, are works of art, not articles of war."

Until the press gets ahold of the photos. Then there had better be some basis of justification - read, codification.
