May 16, 2004 -- Dr. Atkins' disciples are eating major food companies alive. The low-carb diet trend is turning the stomachs of the makers of traditional staples like bread and pasta, who are blaming their shrinking profits on shrinking waistlines.

Lookin' good, Sam! I was at 251 in September and now I'm at 195 and still dropping about 2 lbs a week on average. I'm shooting for 170. I'm not on Atkins, per se, just significantly dropped my calorie and carb intake.
The libs don't approve of low-carb diets (all that nasty meat and fat) so you're gonna see articles like this. I don't recall anyone whinging about the poor pig farmers when lowfat diets became the rage. They just worked to make pork leaner.
I totally agree with you.
To the folks on low carb diets this is a matter of their physical health and well being. To the companies whining and complaining it is a matter of their fiscal health and well being.
Sounds like you and your wife cook the way my husband and I cook. I will, however, admit to the occassional foray into the processed frozen food realm.
I don't know if beans are high in carbs or not - but I absolutely love them - especially black beans!
You commented in a much earlier post about olive oil, I can actually count the number of times in the past year(and probably longer) I have used anything other than olive oil when it comes to using oil in a recipe or for sauteing. I'm not big on fried foods, but every once in a while I do indulge, and olive oil is not conducive to frying.
this was not exactly unpredicted. Why don't these companies figure out how to make their products low-carb?
Certainly Arnold and others are now making low-carb bread;
Atkins markets low-carb pasta etc as do other companies.
This bankrupcy is the result of 'head in the sand' syndrome.
VERY well put...
There's no food more satisfying than a dish of steaming pasta smothered in cheese and tomato sauce.
yup
After losing 100 + pounds on Dr A's plan I can't toss rocks at the low carb theory..........
Stay safe !
Each to his/her own; mine would be a rare Porterhouse with baked potato, asparagus w/ Hollandaise, salad, and sour dough rolls with high quality unsalted butter. Oh--and a Belgian beer. No--not Atkins-friendly--but what the hey.
Well-done, my littler Freeper friend!
Thanks.
I don't think it was a profound statement, just the opinion I had when I started reading this thread.
I have enjoyed the discussions of the various things related to the low carb diets - but the article essentially is about a bunch of whining CEOs trying to protect their cushy jobs and even cushier salaries from a stockholder revolt about losing bottom lines. They are looking for a scape goat.
The bottom line is if they had been producing a decent product at a reasonable price they wouldn't need to be looking for a scapegoat - because they would not be seeing a problem in their bottom line.
LOL! I remember the same thing about playing softball when I was little...I can't catch worth doodley squat, so I'd always get put wayyyyyy out where it wasn't likely a ball would ever make it. I can remember picking strawberries and sorta vaguely being aware that a game was going on.
And I know what you mean about wild apples. There are several up in a meadow above my Dad's...not sweet, but GOSH they're good! We used to sit up there and just eat them one after another, still warm from the sun. Took about half a dozen to make up as much fruit as a normal store bought type.
Here is what really happened to the pasta company, over leveraged. Their troubles were obvious in 2001 before the new diets took hold here. I suspect they and the others are blaming the low carb diet trend to save face with shareholders.

Yeah, I wasn't too much of a ballplayer. But I didn't know there was anyone else who ate strawberries while playing outfield!
I like these diet threads, they really get emotional ;-)
that's exactly what I have been saying practically since my very first post on this thread.
Yep. In my case, it was the beginning of a long and abiding interest in food...and frequent indifference to team sports...

They're always entertaining, in any case! Am I allowed to post the popcorn smilie on a low carb thread?
Though semi-low-carb is working for me, so far. My next weekly weigh-in day is tomorrow...hopefully I'm continuing the downward trend!
The wild strawberries were very small too, as I recall.
You don't look like you need to lose much weight, to tell the truth.
Yep, me too. The thread got off into all different kinds of food and exercise but it is obvious that pasta will always be a big seller. A company may take that revenue and try to buy companies or promote other products leading to the demise of a "pasta" company. But it ain't the pasta that's causing the trouble, it's the management.
I carry it fairly well, I guess! I thought my scale was broken a few months ago when I found out what I really weighed.
Now I just have fifteen or twenty to go to get back to what I was when I was in the military and in good shape...which is still on the high side for my height, but I'm not exactly elvish in build, so that's OK.
