Sen. John Kerry may have his party's nomination locked up, but rank and file Democrats would still rather nominate Sen. Hillary Clinton to run against President Bush this year, a new poll shows.
In a survey of 500 Democrats and Democrat-leanining Independents, pollster Frank Luntz pitted Clinton against Kerry in a head-to-head match-up. Forty-seven percent said they'd dump Kerry if the former first lady would agree to be their standard bearer. Only 44 percent said they'd stand by their man.
Luntz added the question to his poll after top talk radio host Rush Limbaugh asked him to survey Democrats on whether they still preferred other candidates to Kerry. In a list of candidates that didn't include Clinton's name, 40 percent stuck with the Massachusetts Democrat, 57 percent chose others who ran in the primaries.
"This is not a ringing endorsement of their nominee," Limbaugh told his audience after announcing the results on Friday.

It will only happen if Kerry looks likes a sure loser, and it simultaneously looks like Hillary could win.

Quinn aired several years back a story of a reverand talking to someone (was it Quinn? Can't recall), but basically, the jist went that the father was speaking of the evil within Clinton. How the father could see it in the eyes. Whomever was talking to the father said he thought Bill Clinton was a shame to be sure, but he did not think of Bill Clinton as evil. The father replied, I am not talking about him, I'm talking about her.

True... but in 2000 I ended up sharing a corner with a Dem sign-waver who was still) so on fire for That Which Should Never Be Named (in polite company). The impression I came away with is that both bases would be mobilized... and not necessarily to our advantange. (I could be completely wrong, though... and I'm trying to get some of those I know who just sit on the sidelines and passively vote, actively *involved* this time.)
