Outrage as KISS player mouths off on Muslims
Sydney Morning Herald ^ | May 14, 2004

KISS bass player Gene Simmons has caused an uproar among Australia's Muslim community by launching an attack on Islamic culture while in Melbourne.

The lizard-tongued rock god who is touring Australia with the world's most enduring glam rock band launched an attack on Muslim extremists during an interview on Melbourne's 3AW radio - including comments which were labelled inaccurate.

"Extremism believes that it's okay to strap bombs on to your children and send them to paradise and whatever else and to behead people," he said yesterday.

The Israeli-born US musician went on to say Islam was a "vile culture" that treated women worse than dogs.

Muslim women had to walk behind their men and were not allowed to be educated or own houses, he said.

"Your dog, however, can walk side by side, your dog is allowed to have its own dog house... you can send your dog to school to learn tricks, sit, beg, do all that stuff - none of the women have that advantage."

He went on to say the west was under threat.

"This is a vile culture and if you think for a second that it's going to just live in the sands of God's armpit you've got another thing coming," he said.

"They want to come and live right where you live and they think that you're evil."

Simmons said the United Nations approach did not work and the west had to "speak softly and carry a big stick".

The radio station today fielded calls from Muslims upset at the comments, including Australian Muslim of the year Susan Carland, who said Australian Muslims rejected extremism and did not fit Simmons' stereotype.

Ms Carland said she had two degrees, was doing her honours and "certainly do not walk behind my husband".

Chairman of the Islamic Council of Victoria Yasser Soliman said Simmons' comments were "very unfortunate".

"He's very famous obviously and popular and, as a result, influential," he said.

"Mixing the entertainment world with the political and religious world is a minefield."

He said Simmons had begun by talking about extremists but had gone on to vilify the entire Muslim culture.

"A number of his claims regarding women and what they are allowed to do and not do are wrong - Islam teaches the opposite," he said.

Simmons had a right to free speech, but this had to be balanced against the damage done to innocent people, he said.

"I think it would be good for overseas speakers and commentators to be given some sort of advice in regards to our vilification laws here," he said.

"They leave and go back to where they arrived from, but they leave behind a big mess that we have to live with."

Ha, ha--I've always had a soft spot in my heart for KISS in general and Gene Simmons in particular, though I'm not a big fan or a member of the "KISS Army" by any means. The first rock concert I ever attended in the late seventies was a KISS concert, Van Halen opened for them, I think. Mr. Simmons spit fake blood all over the place and swung his Bass guitar over his head like an axe. Heady stuff for a kid who was *supposed* to be at the skating rink.
Anyway, I've heard Gene Simmons talk on this subject before-he's articulate, intelligent, and on this issue exactly right. He's a foreign policy hawk, and a much needed counterweight to the Dixie Chicks-style silliness that is so rampant in the entertainment industry.
Still think the "unmasked" thing was a bad move, though...LOL.

True. Ms. Carland may be "educated" but that doesn't translate to being "smart". Some of the wisest people I ever met lacked much of a formal education.

In the Middle East she wouldn't have a chance to be Muslim of the Year, whatever that is.

I saw Gene Simmons interviewed, I think on O'Reilly, a few years ago. He was raised in Israel till the age of 9 or so, and has no illusions about what's going on in the ME.

Put up a wall? You bet. And shoot anyone who crosses over, is what he said. He's a real tough guy.

I will read up on him. He seems to be some sort of Alice Cooper. Interesting, close to the same theme.

Are you not from the US?

Gene Simmons is real cool. He starred in the classic flick "Wanted Dead or Alive" where he played a Muslim terrorist that has plans to blow up chemical plants in Los Angeles. The prevailing winds would then carry clouds of poison gas into the surrounding area. Rutger Hauer plays the hero. Ex-CIA terrorist hunter Nick Randall. This flick is probably more true to life than we even know.

Great flick. Rent it if you can find it. I have it in my tape collection.

Simmons is probably a Freeper, too.

How about his "Gonna put my face on a nuclear bomb?"

All them commies better git an' ruuuuun!
When I let that sucker fly
All the bad folks gonna die
Gonna put my face on a nuclear bomb

Good ol' Moje. I saw him 10 years ago, with Dred Zeppelin, at the now-defunct Arlington Theater in Indianapolis. Great show, lots of laughs.

And that was before I knew of Don Henley's abhorrent politics.

And his comments are wrong because?

That must refer to this comment as everything else looks remarkably accurate:

"Your dog, however, can walk side by side, your dog is allowed to have its own dog house... you can send your dog to school to learn tricks, sit, beg, do all that stuff - none of the women have that advantage."

You see, this is obviously false since Muslim cultures tend to treat dogs like crap, too.

Gene Simmons is a raving idiot (ever heard him talk about his non-marrage to Shannon Tweed?).

That said, he's right about a few things this time. I guess even a stopped watch is right twice a day.
