Vajpayee Resigns After Poll Upset

May 13, 2004

NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has resigned after a stunning election upset, ending his nearly six years in power and setting the stage for the return of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty.

The move follows a stronger than anticipated showing from the main Congress party headed by Italian born-Sonia Gandhi.

Though the party won't be able to form a majority, the stage is now set for Gandhi to be the next leader of the world's biggest democracy.

In brief comments to reporters on Thursday Gandhi declined to say if she would be prime minister, saying only that it was be up to alliance leaders and they would make a decision on Saturday.

"The Congress party will take the lead to ensure our country has a strong, stable and secular government at the earliest," Gandhi said.

As details of the result were reported, celebrations erupted on the streets throughout the country with Congress supporters waving flags, dancing, singing as they heralded the party's apparent victory. ('Unreal' result)

Gandhi's Congress won 219 out of 539 seats for which votes were counted Thursday in the 543-member lower house, or Lok Sabha.

She also has the support of leftist parties which won 63 seats.

In contrast, Vajpayee's NDA coalition won 188 seats, meaning no single party has gained a clear majority of 272 seats.

I wouldn't consider this good news. Shes a true liberal. I expect a new appeasement regime.

The communists and the socialists (Congress Party) will run India's economy back into the ground and somehow blame the USA unless Kerry wins. I am not liking to looks of international politics so far this year. At least the actor didn't win in the Philippines. However, Spain is turning out to be even worse than first indications.

Viva India?

Even though she's a Gandhi by marriage, she might want to have her life insurance policy increased....

You can probably expect a lot of those offshore jobs to be repatriated. India is going to be a dangerous place very soon.

Socialism is on its way back. And once it destroys the economy they will find some villain like the US to blame. It's a shame a country with so many smart people thinks an Italian woman who just happened to be married to a Ghandi is somehow equipped to run their country.

NDA lost because the electorate perceived them to be soft on islamofacism.

This is a win win. India will press harder against Pakistan and the socialists will find a way to screw-up India's IT surge.

I agree that the socialist/communist Congress Party will run India into the ground. Count on it! But I wouldn't be too critical of the Indians because they elected an Italian Gandhi-family in-law with no governing experience. I mean, the assholes in this country elected a corrupt hick from a backwoods skunkwater like Arkansas, TWICE, who exhibited a degree of degeneracy in politics unknown since the days of pagan Rome.

This is a good result for Indian Christians who had been persecuted under BJP. They will be rejoicing today.

Sonia Gandhi is admired but the real targets of worship are her children in the Nehru dynasty - Rahul and Priyanka. THEY will be the future leaders of the country, sooner or later. I guess it's like the Bush dynasty, but over several generations.

The middle-class in India will keep getting wealthier, even under Congress-I. Many are into the high-tech industry, and that outsourcing boon to India will continue.

Consider this. When I was visiting Bangalore 11 years ago, there wasn't any bank teller in the whole city. The whole concept was completely alien. The banks had these massive accounting ledger books and no computers. Now Bangalore is a world-renowned leader in computer software. India also just completed the world's largest fully-computerized election. The return of the Congress Party isn't going to change any of this.

The great irony of India's slide toward socialism is that the biggest winner will be China. As businesses choose between the two, the always cheaper China is no longer handicapped by communism if India is going to be just as bad.

Congress is a corrupt socialist party. They are going to look for ways to loot or cook the goose to get at the golden eggs.

This is awful news for Christians. The Congress party will be against all religion. They are socialists. Think France.

Even of it does not happen soon it brings forth the central flaws of the economic globalists' plans: Man does not live by bread alone; Nations are more than market places; there is no practical organization of peoples larger than the National State that can ever hope to govern a large population united by a shared history, culture and civilization; events can collide in such a way that they may not call on the american people allowing the use of our military to protect their overseas assets. The wise would begin restructring now.

This is why the Euros and the Rats in this country hate the GOP so much. Those ignorant peasants and their old fashion notions of self determination, how nettlesome!.

If we see problems in India and we have even a slight pricking if the bubble in China then we can expect to see at least a reassessment of the globaists' policy. Let us hope that all of this happens after Nov.

A Bush win is crucial: It is not that he is not aligned with the globalist program, It is just much harder to accelerate it from the the GOP side. They are all least honest patriots - they are just misguided.

If only we could push through a regime of real tax, regulatory, tort, welfare and entitlement reform then or future would be quite bright. Taking apart the New Deal and the great society is the key domestic issue of the decade, as nubdabe as that might seem to the average voter.

What mayhem will ensue if Kerry gets in.

I don't think so. These guys won't rock the boat and we should wait and watch.

Besides, they're no more socialist than the preceding government who had groups that wanted all foreign manufacturers out (some Jagran something).

This would be a good thing for India as the Christian baiting BJP is kicked out of power.

I kind of doubt they would be socialists, after all they WERE the one who opened up the Indian market and allowed Pepsi and Coke back in, which the 70s BJP government had thrown out.

I'd guess they'd be more compassionate conservatives instead of fundamentalists.

Well actually they don't seem so socialistics. And you got to compare the statistics -- under the Congress for 50 years there was no violence against Christians, under the BJP, there was loads of violence and the murder of GRaham Staines and his two young sons and the laws passed banning conversion.

Here, they have a Roman Catholic elected as the head of party and potentially the head of government.

This is a good thing.

"The communists and the socialists (Congress Party) will run India's economy back into the ground."

I suppose if you are one of the many in a panic about outsourcing, the demise of the Indian economy will be a good thing. Maybe the international oil markets will calm a bit if they believe the Indian demand for oil will decrease as their economy tanks. On the other hand, I tend toward a free trade view, so I think it will ultimately be bad for the US economy.

However, I certainly wouldn't move any operations to India until I find out how bad the new leftist government will be.
