The most likely thing seems to be that Berg was involved with International ANSWER and went to Iraq to try to undermine the war effort on their behalf. His father appears to be active in Left-wing politics; his own anti-war activism was pointed out of Free Republic.

Of course, if this is true he may have met with Al Qaeda in hopes of doing a favor for them. He may have thought that he was going to contribute to the ant-war movement by posing as a hostage.

It didn't work out that way in the end, however.

I have to admit that when I first heard this guy compared to Rachel Corrie that I was disgusted and thought the comparison was insane. For the first time now, I'm really starting to wonder.

Can you point me to this? I seem to have missed it; the last I saw on FR was that Nick was a Bush supporter.

I read yesterday that Berg's father said that his son supported the war. WTF is going on here then?

He may have thought that he was going to contribute to the ant-war movement by posing as a hostage.

I was wondering something similar, because this story is getting weird and isn't passing the smell test.

The horrifying thought:

Assuming Berg and the murderous thugs sort of knew each other, what if Nick 'posed' for the video, thinking it was a PR type stunt. Notice in the video that he does not show much reaction while sitting on the floor, as if he doesn't know what is about to happen. Nick cooperates in filming the PR stunt, but at the last moments, Zarqawi and company perform the real act.

Ooooooh, that's a scary thought. If true, can you imagine his horror when his "friends" turned on him?

I can't find any fault with that theory, except that it pegs the 'just-damn' meter. All I can say is wow.

Whatever the truth, daddy Berg is sure trying to get as much political mileage out of his own son's death as possible. If it does, indeed, turn out that the son was a Left-wing activist over there to offer himself as a phony hostage (like the Japanese a few weeks ago)...well, there are no words, just lots of very hot emotion...

Nick Berg, unlike his dad, was a supported of our President. Your scenario seems unlikely in that light.

Gotta say, I've been wondering about that possibility myself...

Or, even worse yet, could he have known?

Not true about the son .. according to people who FOX has interviewed here and in Iraq, Nick was a strong supporter of Bush. It was the father who supported the left .. and there are reports that they disagreed about it a lot.

- I tend to agree with your thinking on this. Although the word was quickly put out that Berg was a Bush supporter and disagreed with his father, it was I believe, just his cover to divert suspicion that his true role in Iraq was to be an ANSWER liason to Al Quada and to give them any support, financial or otherwise, that he could arrange. His questioning by the FBI in Iraq must have been because they had run into him before in the U.S. and were suspicious that he had turned up again. I think he had made contact with his killers, trusted them, and didn't realize that being an American Jew in their eyes far outweighed any ANSWER support he could arrange. Just a naive guy playing James Bond who didn't realize the true depth of hatred and viciousness of the gang he had cozied up to.
