Relatives in Iraq, go figure. I'm amazed by the information, nevermind speculation, that is surfacing. The problem for Nick is that his uncle by marriage would, imo, never consider him family. Him being Jewish and all. I wonder if his aunt converted when she married?

Thanks for the link

Whatever the reason Nicholas Berg was in Iraq and these other places,
he was butchered by Muslims. Islam is the enemy.

You're not crazy--just making ridiculous leaps--those are cheap chairs in a poor country and are probably ubiquitous--as for thepaint coloe--well I suspect there are no Sherwin Williams there--probably a limited st of available paints.

Agree with your scenario re Berg's activity and purpose in Iraq.

Also agree that the father slipped badly when he said the people who killed his son didn't realize that they killed a friend.

I saw the interview where he said this and then went further to say that GWB and Rumsfeld were the ones responsible for his son's death and that Al Quada is probably almost as bad as they are.

Convoluted, to say the least, that he would say that the people who butchered his son were only almost as bad as GWB and Rumsfeld.

Mike Berg is a mad commie true-believer, adrift in 2004.

P-Marlowe - your comments are lucid and sharp.

Just an addition about the email - I read (on FR, natch) that terrorists sometimes use a webmail account, each have the password, write messages which they put in the draft file and are never sent, and then the other one(s) get them out of the draft file, delete, and the email never goes into the ether.

Is this the same as what you're describing?

"person killed ... not actually ... Nick Berg"

That's what I was thinking. Seeing pictures from Nick's family, and then seeing a much thinner, smaller framed, bearded person in the video .. I had a hard time connecting the two of them.

Whatever the reason Nicholas Berg was in Iraq and these other places, he was butchered by Muslims. Islam is the enemy.

But this is not true to Berg's father who said that al Qaeda is probably as dangerous as Bush and Rumsfeld. It's clear to me that Nick Berg's father has a vested interest in not seeing his son's death used to support Bush's view of the terrorist threat and related policies. This is what makes the question of who Nick Berg was and what he was doing in Iraq more intriguing. As we well know here, those who sympathize with the anti-war western crowd have no more standing with Muslim extremists than those of who don't. That would be a bitter pill for the former to swallow and it surely goes a long way in explaining the elder Berg's outrageous effort to hold Bush responsible for his son's death.

Agree with your post 1,105. That's why I can't relate at all to his reaction to the awful death of his son. People of his ilk just look like the rest of us, but they're wired differently.

I disagree, the two pbotos are consistent, especially considering how he had lost weight while in Africa and that he had been kidnapped for up to a month, where he could have been starved, tortured, suffered dissentary, etc. The poster I pinged was of the opinion that it wasn't him.

Think about it, if US intelligence could determine that one of the hooded guys was Al Zaq, they probably can tell if that was Nick or not. Unless you are buying into that Bush ordered Nick killed because he was a double agent about to spill the beans on OKC being a Clinton-CIA-Bush-Bildeburger plot...

I give wide lattitude to those in grief, especially parents for their children.

I won't comment now about Nicholas Berg's father.

I read in another place (somewhere on FR) that he also had been offered transport to the airport.

I can't believe what I'm reading here. It sounds absolutely bogus, in every direction. I suppose he also could have been just what he said and his father said he was, but alarm bells are ringing continuously.

Read on a thread (on FR, natch) today, quoting someone Berg hung out with in Iraq as saying that Berg was looking forward to meeting the right woman some day, something about having kids eventually. Something about not having met the right woman yet.

Bush would never do that .. and why would Bush care if Nick did know anything about OKC ..?? That's kind of wild to me.

It's probably him .. it was just curious to me how the photo of what he looked like when he left home and what he looked like in the video .. they just didn't look like the same person to me.

Well .. if Nick had relatives there, it would seem much more logical for him to be in Iraq.

I see a lot of logic and probability there.

The least logical is a innocent Jew traveling alone without prior contracts in a hostile Islamic combat area filled with Fruitcakes of Islam that kill everyone including young Muslim Iraqi kids.

I heard one reporter earlier tonight on WABC 770 NYC with Steve Malzberg saying Nick Berg "was brilliant".

I can only vouch for the past tense "was" used by the journalist.

"Brilliance" is a stupid word to use to describe an unarmed civilian biking in a foreign country populated by citizens who hate your ethnicity and home country.

If I had to write a doomsday scenario this could be it.

One word describes this incident:

dumb

Why did Nick go to Iraq?

Doctor Kevorkian is not available right now.

All things considered I am turning down Mike Berg's book and movie proposal cold.

We all stocked up on dumb.
