The explosion happened underneath a VIP-seating area during a ceremony in the Dynamo stadium that was attended by senior Chechen officials. An Associated Press reporter at the scene said that numerous people were injured.
Sergei Kozhemyaka, a duty officer at the Emergency Situations Ministry in southern Russia, said that the land mine injured Kadyrov, the Moscow-backed leader of the rebel region. The Interfax news agency reported that Col. Gen. Valery Baranov, head of the Joint Army Command of the North Caucasus, was also among the injured.
Kozhemyaka said that he was told there was another explosive device was hidden at the stadium, and authorities were trying to find it. Russia's Echo of Moscow radio reported that numerous people were detained.
